Emerging Asia, which covers India, China, and Southeast Asia, will be revelling in an economic growth rate of 6.3 percent annually from 2018 to 2022, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. But there’s a hitch: Asia is also waist-deep in alarming projections of deaths, damages to livelihoods and properties, and worsening inequality because of disasters and climate change. Asia’s robust economic growth is not underwritten. The latest assessment report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world’s largest scientific body formed to study climate change, found that “People living in low-lying coastal zones and floodplains are probably most at risk from climate change impacts in Asia. Half of Asia’s urban population lives in these areas. Data showed that the registered number of Koreans seeking to meet their loved ones in the DPRK totaled 132,124 as of end-May, of which only about 57,000 remains alive. NDO/ VNA – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with country leaders and senior officials on the side-lines of the G20 Summit in Hamburg on July 8. Meeting Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the PM asked Indonesia to deal with fishery issues in a humanitarian spirit, in line with their strategic bilateral partnership. He suggested accelerating the conclusion of negotiations on demarcation of exclusive economic zones between the two countries. Widodo, for his part, expressed his support for Vietnam’s successful hosting of APEC Year 2017 and agreed with the Vietnamese PM’s suggestions. Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung met world leaders in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on November 21 on the sidelines of the 27th ASEAN Summit and related meetings. In his meeting with US President Barack Obama, PM Dung affirmed that Vietnam wishes to strengthen its strategic partnership with the US and urged the US to make more active contributions to maintaining peace, stability and prosperity in the region, including the East Sea. Obama said the countries should work closely together to adopt and effectively materialise the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal. On the East Sea issue, the US President said his country supports Vietnam’s stance, and called on Vietnam and ASEAN member countries to have a common voice and increase coordination to settle disputes by peaceful means in line with international law and regional agreements.
