Garment-textile sector eyes 39 billion USD in export turnover

· January 15, 2021 ·

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s garment-textile sector sets a target of 39 billion USD in export revenue this year, equal to that of 2019, according to the Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex). Last year, due to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the US-China trade tensions, the trade protectionism and the Brexit, Vietnam’s garment-textile exports reached only 35 billion USD. However, the result is still remarkable given the global demand dropping over 22 percent. In 2020, Vietnam was the only among the world’s top five garment-textile exporters not to have to cease production. Vinatex recorded total revenue of 15.5 trillion VND (670.7 million USD) and combined profits of 628.9 billion VND, equal to 106 percent and 164.8 percent of the set targets, respectively. Vinatex Chairman Le Tien Truong suggested the Government cut long-term interest rates, elaborating that garment-textile firms would find it hard to access loans after a year of low business … [Read more...] about Garment-textile sector eyes 39 billion USD in export turnover

Social media – a revolution to be feared

· January 15, 2021 ·

Take Germany for example. Despite hailing free speech as one of its bastions of freedom, Germany has remained relatively strict on which type of content is allowed to exist on social media platforms used by its citizens, owing to its history. If German public authorities detect provocative behavior on social media, such as hate speech or references to Nazism, social media companies are required to remove such content from their platforms, and face a fine of over $60 million for failing to comply. However, Seibert said in the same press conference that the general behavior of social media companies, including their ability to restrict and censor content on their platforms, is “under the legal framework decided by legislators, not by those who run the company". … [Read more...] about Social media – a revolution to be feared

RCEP to help farm produce expand presence in global markets

· January 15, 2021 ·

HCM City (VNA) - The recently-signed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement will create opportunities for Vietnam’s agricultural products to extend their reach in the region and the world, experts have said. Le Duy Minh, President of the Vietnam Farms and Agricultural Enterprises Association, told a meeting in Ho Chi Minh City on January 15 that the agriculture sector has been integrating intensively and extensively into the world but also faces considerable difficulties and challenges, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, trade disputes between major economies, and an increase in technical barriers in many countries. Vietnam signed a number of important economic deals in 2020, heralding a new era of economic integration with opportunities to expand export markets and attract more domestic and foreign investment. Among the deals, the RCEP, which gathers together 10 ASEAN countries and five partners (the Republic of Korea, China, … [Read more...] about RCEP to help farm produce expand presence in global markets
