Vietnam’s tourism and people in general suffered shocking news at the end of 2018 as a roadside bomb detonated near a bus as it crossed Al-Haram district, close to the well-known pyramids in Giza. The explosion killed three Vietnamese people and their Egyptian guide, while another 12 inflicted severe injuries. Shortly after the incident, Saigontourist Travel Service Company, the agency operating the Egypt tour, immediately worked with Bao Viet Insurance Corporation on the insurance benefits of the tourists. As announced by Bao Viet, those killed in the bomb attack will receive the maximum life insurance coverage amount of VND2.4 billion ($104,350), while the company will also support expenditure to complete procedures to take the bodies of the three victims home and organise funeral services. Health insurance covers 87.62 percent of Vietnam population

Up to 14.19 million people in the country took part in compulsory social insurance, 251,000 people with voluntary social insurance and 12.13 million people with unemployment insurance. In October alone, social security offices nationwide handled 11,084 submissions for pension and monthly social insurance compensation, helped 70,690 people receive their lump sums, and 838,483 others get sickness, maternity or health recovery benefits. National agreements on foreign workers’ social insurance negotiated
Deputy General Director of Vietnam Social Security (VSS) Dao Viet Anh was quoted by the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) as telling a VSS conference in Hanoi on November 2 that bilateral agreements for a new generation of social insurance policies have been negotiated to support foreign workers engaging in Vietnam’s social insurance scheme. Under Decree No. 143/2018/ND-CP detailing the Law on Social Insurance and the Law on Labor Safety and Hygiene, foreigners working in Vietnam with a work permit, practice certificate, or practice license granted by competent Vietnamese authorities and under indefinite-term labor contracts or contracts with a term of one full year or more shall be subject to compulsory social insurance. Those temporarily transferred from parent companies abroad to subsidiaries in Vietnam or reaching the retirement age shall not be subject to the compulsory social insurance scheme. A business representative noted it is necessary to enhance the quality of the current health insurance cards, as they are made of paper, which is thin and tears easily. Moreover, these cards are no longer reissued each year, making it difficult for workers to preserve them over the long term.
