Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Sunday cancelled a controversial satellite-city development around a wildlife sanctuary and zoo near the capital following growing online appeals to halt the project. - AFP pic Conservationists and locals began voicing their concerns and objections when the development plan around the Phnom Tamao zoo and wildlife rescue centre came to light several months ago. Developers last week started razing privatised areas around the more than 2,000-hectare Phnom Tamao forest area, an hour drive from capital Phnom Penh, and home to many rare and endangered wildlife including sambar deer at the zoo. Officials defended the development saying the area's land was too sandy for trees and wild pigs destroyed farmers' crops. The park's management said Wednesday the cameras have been in position where a local reported seeing a tiger inside the park in the central Quang Binh Province. When seeing the tiger, the person had freaked out, climbed a tree, and made some sounds to distract the animal, causing it to run away into the forest. The incident was later reported to the park's management board, the government news portal reported Thursday. A camera trap is a digital camera connected to an infrared sensor that can "see" warm objects that are moving, like animals. When an animal moves past the sensor it causes the camera to fire, recording an image or video to the memory card for later retrieval. The trap can be left in the field to continuously monitor an area of habitat for weeks or even months, recording the rarest events that occur in nature, according to the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF). According to Save Vietnam's Wildlife, a non-profit organization that works on solutions to conserve … [Read more...] about Tiger’s existence under verification at Phong Nha-Ke Bang park
Bangkok (NNT/VNA) - Thailand is aiming to become the leading Southeast Asian nation in terms of the size of its tiger population by 2034. During an event commemorating International Tiger Day on July 29, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa said the kingdom was praised by neighbouring countries at the 4th Asia Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation for its efficient wildlife conservation efforts. He added that the achievement in protecting these big cats was the result of the National Strategy for Tiger Conservation 2010-2022, which helped the nation have the highest number of wild tigers in Southeast Asia. According to the Natural Resources and Environment Minister, the tiger population in the Thungyai and Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuaries increased from 42 in 2012 to 100 in 2022 as a result of a smart patrol system and technology certified by international standards. These innovations have been installed in 213 protected forest parks … [Read more...] about Thailand aims for biggest tiger population in Southeast Asia by 2034
Illustrative photo (Source: VietnamPlus) Hanoi (VNA) - While there are very few wild tigers left, the number of the registered captive big cats in Vietnam, mostly in private facilities, has increased from 97 in 2010 to 364 in 2021. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has arrested eight members, including three Vietnamese, of a wildlife trafficking ring that was found illegally possessing nearly 400kg of pangolin scales. According to initial investigations, these Vietnamese nationals were high-ranking members of an organized crime group involved in the trafficking of ivory, pangolin scales, rhino horns and lion bones from Mozambique and South Africa through Nigeria to Vietnam, Nigerian daily Blueprint reported on Friday. The names and other details of the three Vietnamese traffickers have yet to be announced. NCS smashed the ring on August 3, in conjunction with Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC), an international body that works to disrupt and dismantle networks of illegal wildlife trade, said NCS spokesman Timi Bomodi. A Pakistan zoo has called off plans to auction 12 lions from its ever-growing pride to private buyers, saying it would instead create new enclosures for the big cats. Lahore Safari Zoo cancelled an auction of lions from its growing pride and said it would expand current facilities instead. The auction planned for Thursday had drawn condemnation from the WWF, which urged authorities at Lahore Safari Zoo to instead rehome them with other government wildlife facilities. "The main reason behind the auction was the lack of space," deputy director Tanvir Ahmed Janjua told AFP, adding officials had decided to speed up work building two new enclosures. "Now that this issue is to be resolved soon, there is no need for the auction to take place." Set over 200 acres, Lahore Safari Zoo is considered one of the best in the country -- where zoos are known for disregarding animal welfare. The Lahore facility is currently home to 29 lions, six resident tigers and two … [Read more...] about Pakistan zoo cancels lion auction, plans expansion instead
