Vietnam, Japan review joint initiative

It was reported at the meeting that 47 out of the total 80 sub-items in the joint initiative have been well implemented as scheduled so far, 15 are underway, six make no progress, and work will start on 12 others in the time ahead. Do Nhat Hoang, head of the Foreign Investment Agency under the MPI, said Vietnamese ministries and agencies have coordinated with the Japanese side to implement commitments in the action plan of the initiative. Vietnam’s commitment to materialising the joint initiative manifests the government’s resolve to improve the domestic investment environment, he said. Many legal documents have been amended and adopted within the framework of the initiative, he noted, adding that Vietnamese ministries and agencies have also taken into consideration many recommendations of Japan during the consolidation process of fine-tuning laws and policies, as well as law enforcement. Among them are rare and endangered species listed in Vietnam's Red Book like the Delacour's langur. Following the goalless draw against Indonesia in the first match, Vietnam were determined to secure three points. From the off, Vietnam were on the front foot. After missing two good chances in the opening exchanges, striker Nguyen Quoc Viet found the net with his third early effort to open the scoring. In the 16th minute, striker Nguyen Van Truong had a good chance to double the lead but after dribbling through the defence his effort was saved by Lance Jeter Aquino Bencio. HCMC residents line up before daybreak for passports

Among those waiting outside the Immigration Department on Nguyen Trai Street in HCMC's District 1 was 22-year-old Nguyen Quoc Danh (R). He said he was there before daybreak because he needed a passport so he could study abroad. He had tried to submit his application three times already, but failed because there were simply too many people ahead of him. Some people brought along a snack to munch as they waited. About two kilometers away, at 5:30 a.m., around 50 people were waiting in front of an immigration office on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street. Demand for passports has soared after the application process was temporarily suspended for one month for "non-urgent" purposes.
