Goodbye Shanghai: After 16 years, Covid curbs send American family packing

July 7, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

Heather and husband George arrived in Shanghai from New York in 2006 for a one-year adventure, but 16 years later their two-bedroom apartment in Shanghai’s historic former French Concession is the only home their children have ever known. So while repatriating to the United States is technically a homecoming for Heather and George, leaving Shanghai means leaving home for daughters Charlotte, 14, and Matilda, 12. Heather spent the month of June readying for a return to the United States. Her husband left weeks earlier with their family dog to help prepare for their new life in Washington D.C. "I haven't had the luxury to really grieve a lot of what I'm leaving behind because I need to get two kids and a cat out of here ... so it's been really focused on that logistics," she told Reuters from her flat which had just been emptied out by movers. The Kaye family are part of an exodus of both foreigners and locals from Shanghai as China's most cosmopolitan city tries to find its … [Read more...] about Goodbye Shanghai: After 16 years, Covid curbs send American family packing

July 7, 2022 by bizhub.vn

Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce Vietnam Kenneth Atkinson. The trade and investment relationship between Viet Nam and the UK has grown significantly a year after the UK-Viet Nam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA) came into effect. Viet Nam News spoke to Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce Vietnam Kenneth Atkinson about the effectiveness of the trade deal as well as opportunities for further cooperation between the two countries. How do you assess improvements in trade and investment between Viet Nam and the UK a year after implementing the UKVFTA? The UK-Viet Nam FTA came into effect on May 1, 2021 but with retroactive benefits starting January 1, 2021. This was one of the speediest negotiations of any FTA, in large part due to the strong strategic partnership established by the Governments of Viet Nam and UK. The Strategic Partnership has been in place for 10 years and is stated as being at its strongest ever. The UK is the European country that has maintained … [Read more...] about Trade, investment between Viet Nam and UK expand steadily in all sectors

Leniency for criminals willing to pay up? No, thanks

July 7, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

It was good question, asked in reaction to a recommendation by the nation's top prosecutor that people guilty of corruption be allowed lighter sentences in exchange for money and assets. But I didn't know how to answer that question right off the bat. I don't think that the proposal, which was put forward by Le Minh Tri, head of the Supreme People's Procuracy of Vietnam, at a conference to review last 10 years of the anti-corruption movement, can be boiled down to "right" or "wrong". Tri argued that the fight against corruption should be more about preventing it and less about punishing the crime ; and that those guilty of corruption and economic crimes can be given opportunities to fix their misdeeds. That would not only allow the state to recover its lost assets, but also be a humane gesture. There is some merit to this argument, I thought. After all, we haven't been able to seize back much of the lost assets in recent economic and corruption cases that have been prosecuted … [Read more...] about Leniency for criminals willing to pay up? Grand energy aims require direction

July 7, 2022 by vir.com.vn

Speaking at the Vietnam Circular Economy Forum 2022 last week in Hanoi, Caitlin Wiesen, resident representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam, suggested that the country needs to further promote renewable energy production. “We know that the cost of renewable energy has dropped dramatically, by 89 per cent over the past 10 years, and solar is currently the cheapest source of electricity,” she explained. In just five years, Vietnam has scaled up its solar capacity from virtually zero to over 16,000MW by 2022, far exceeding national targets, Wiesen added. “Vietnam also has rich wind power potential, especially offshore wind, with more than 3,200km of coastline,” she said. Meanwhile, over the past decades, the energy sector has been a fundamental enabler of inclusive economic development in Vietnam. The sector is well-positioned to lead the green growth ambitions of the country, Wiesen said, and can catalyse new investments, create new jobs, and … [Read more...] about Grand energy aims require direction
