VNA/VNS Photo Quang Đạt QUẢNG NINH — The Philippines got off to a good start to the men's beach volleyball qualifying round on Tuần Châu Island, Quảng Ninh Province beating Singapore 2-0 on the first day of the event. The two teams (number 1 and 2) of the Philippines both got a 2-0 win over Singapore to grab the overall win in the curtain-raiser of the men’s division. Thailand had to edge out Malaysia 2-1 in the conclusive third match to ink their first win in the qualifying round. In the first match, Thailand lost to Malaysia 2-1, but they then tied the score with a 2-0 win in the second match. In the third match, Thailand took a 2-1 win over Malaysia to draw first blood. The two had a good result in the final rounds to finish top at the golf event. Natthakritta Vongtaveelap scored 14-under-par in the final round to beat her opponents and top the podium. The Thai player kept her momentum from the first and second rounds as she earned 5-under-par and 10-under-par. VNA/VNS Photo Huy Hùng Thanh Hà Felisberto de Deus won Timor Leste's first SEA Games medal while Nguyễn Thị Oanh of Việt Nam completed a title hat-trick in athletics on May 15 in Hà Nội. Oanh finished first in the women's 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9min 52.46sec, setting a new Games record. Reigning champion Oanh separated from the pack from the first steps. She made an outstanding solo burst for the finish line, leaving all others far behind. Oanh was surprised looking at the electric board and found that her result was a new record. "I could not believe it is a record," Oanh told the media. "I am so happy with this result. We have prepared much for the tournament," said Bắc Giang-born Oanh. “I made it, it was so wonderful," Oanh yelled in front of many supporters at the Mỹ Đình Gymnasium.
