Plantations dreaming of FSC status for rubber products, Photo: Duc Thanh Nguyen Vinh Phuong, the owner of a 150-hectare rubber plantation area in the south-eastern province of Tay Ninh has recently spent more time studying the process of obtaining the FSC certification. Although he is interested in cultivating sustainable rubber, he remains hesitant to implement this process. Phuong pointed out that the rule of a 10-per-cent conservation area seems to be an infeasible requirement for small operators of plantation areas. The rule would mean that Phuong would lose $1,500 over 10 days of rubber tapping if he saved 10 per cent of his 150-ha plantation area for conservation. Besides state-owned companies like Tan Bien Rubber and Tay Ninh Rubber, there are 12 private firms competing to source rubber. The week-long event, organised by Sơn La Provincial People’s Committee in collaboration with Central Retail Vietnam, is an effort to promote high-quality provincial products to the capital city’s consumers. The event has attracted 15 businesses and cooperatives, introducing both fresh fruits and vegetables such as mango, longan, avocado, guava, banana, Mộc Châu pumpkin, cabbage and zucchini to processed foods. The buying and selling forces cancelled each other out, leaving the index more or less stable at 1,218.09 points, down 0.01 points compared to the previous session. Vietnam police seize over 1.3 tonnes of drugs in year’s first half
Police in Vietnam solved more than 10,000 drug-related cases in the first six months of 2022, confiscating upwards of 1.3 metric tons of narcotics of various types. Major General Nguyen Van Vien, head of the Investigation Police Department on Drug-related Crimes under the Ministry of Public Security, on Tuesday reported about the result of the unit’s crime fighting efforts in this year’s first half. Anti-drug police nationwide dealt with more than 10,000 cases during this period, arresting over 16,000 suspects and confiscating 397 kilograms of heroin, 838 kilograms of synthetic drugs, and 71 kilograms of marijuana, Vien elaborated.
