The second of three Asiatic cheetah cubs born in captivity in Iran has died in a blow to conservation efforts for the critically endangered subspecies, state media reported Wednesday. The forest protection department of Ho Chi Minh City received two otters from Nguyen Thi An, a 72-year-old resident of Thu Duc City, on Friday. The two otters that An voluntarily transferred to the authorities are two Asian small-clawed otters, whose scientific names are Aonyx cinereus, weighing about four kilograms each, according to an officer. They are classified as rare and endangered forest animals. After the handover, the otters were brought to the Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station in the namesake district for treatment and further care before being released into the nature.
