Weak market sentiment may continue to weigh on investors, causing stocks to consolidate at current price levels this week, as increasing political and economic risks rattle global markets. The Vietnamese stock market underwent a quiet trading week with attention shifting to the US mid-term elections and the Fed meeting in the middle of last week. The two events did not have a significant impact on both global and local markets as they had been priced in earlier so that investors could avoid potential risks. The VND is seen as one of the least depreciated currencies in the region, Photo: Le Toan FX on fire The daily fixing last Thursday set itself again to a record high of VND22,662 a dollar, adding VND13 a dollar on top of the previous day’s rate, before slightly cooling down to VND22,660 on Friday. Across local commercial banks, the FX rate was reported as edging up last Friday, following a sideways movement seen days before. Each dollar was sold at VND23,095-23,125 and bought at VND23,000-23,030 a dollar, with VND10-20 added on both the buy and sell sides. The upswing of the daily fixing and FX rates in the local market happened in response to the greenback gaining power against other major currencies, with the dollar index breaking the 95.00 figure last week. With the daily rate consistently trending upward in the past four weeks, investment advisory manager Phan Dung Khanh at Maybank Kim Eng Securities in Ho Chi Minh City said that the causes were attributed to several … [Read more...] about VND to remain steady until year’s end
It has to pay to get rid of huge amounts of paper and plastic it would normally sell to China. Beijing is no longer buying, claiming the recycled materials are "contaminated." For sure, the 900 tons of trash dumped at all hours of the day and night, five days a week, on the conveyor belts at the plant in Elkridge, Maryland - an hour's drive from the U.S. capital - are not clean. Amid the nerve-shattering din and clouds of brown dust, dozens of workers in gloves and masks - most of them women - nimbly pluck a diverse array of objects from the piles that could count as "contaminants." That could be anything from clothes to cables to tree branches to the bane of all recyclers: plastic bags, which are not supposed to go in recycling bins because they snarl up the machinery. "We've had to slow our machinery, and hire more people" to clean up the waste, says Michael Taylor, the head of recycling operations for Waste Management, the company that runs the plant. At the end of the sorting line … [Read more...] about Trash piles up in US as China closes door to recycling
