It’s time to translate Europe’s and Asia’s power into a real partnership
Josep Borrell* On Sunday 15 and Monday 16 December, I chair ASEM, the “Asia-Europe Meeting”. What might seem to be a rather bureaucratic acronym, actually is a politically highly relevant event for our continents. I had offered to host this meeting in Madrid when I was still Foreign Minister of Spain and now I will be chairing it as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. It underlines my personal interest in the fast-moving continent that is Asia today. ASEM brings together 53 partners made up of the 28 EU Member States, Norway, Switzerland and the EU, and on the Asia side, 21 countries and the ASEAN Secretariat. Together we represent: · 55 per cent of global trade · 60 per cent of global GDP · 60 per cent of the global population · 75 per cent of global tourism Simply bringing countries together does not, of course, guarantee any results. But it creates … [Read more...] about It’s time to translate Europe’s and Asia’s power into a real partnership
Vietnam has lowest rate of low birthweight babies in Southeast Asia
The study, done by UNICEF, WHO and health organizations, said the rate in Vietnam fell to 8.2 percent in 2015 from 9.2 percent in 2000. The number of newborns of below average weight, described as less than 2.5 kilograms or 5.5 pounds, stayed almost constant at 130,000 per year during the period. Rana Flowers, UNICEF’s representative in Vietnam, said: "This figure is most encouraging. However as a national average, it does not give us the complete picture and is likely to hide important disparities." She said among poor people 28 percent of mothers do not have institutional deliveries, and their children’s weights are not usually recorded. After assessing birthweights in 148 countries and reviewing 281 million births, the study, the first of its kind, found more than 20 million newborns in 2015, or one in seven, had low birthweight. Around 80 percent of all newborns who die have low birthweights. Worldwide, the rate of low birthweight babies fell from 17.5 percent in 2000 … [Read more...] about Vietnam has lowest rate of low birthweight babies in Southeast Asia
Sexual abuse of underage school kids a legal, cultural failure
When 14-year-old H.T.H brought home a cell phone from school, her family was puzzled. She said her IT teacher had given it to her so she could report class attendance to him. The family was unconvinced. They had been noticing some unusual behavior by H.T.H of late. They kept pushing the boarding school girl for the truth. Finally, the girl admitted that her teacher had been having sex with her. He gave her the phone so he could contact her and tell her where to meet privately at school. The girl was 12-weeks pregnant when the truth came out. The teacher, Nguyen Viet Anh was arrested in April after the family lodged a complaint. He has reportedly confessed to having sex with her on multiple occasions at their school since late 2017, when the girl was in 7th grade. Unfortunately, H.T.H is just one among hundreds, if not thousands of children suffering sexual abuse at the hands of teachers and other figures of authority. The country was shaken when at least 10 boys of a … [Read more...] about Sexual abuse of underage school kids a legal, cultural failure
