American audiences had a rare opportunity to witness experimental Vietnamese theater when Nguoi dan ba that lac (The Missing Woman) was performed by an all-Vietnamese cast at New York's West-End Theater last month. The Missing Woman, performed in Vietnamese language, is about a young painter whose wife, an actress, suddenly leaves him and the family without reason. In his newfound loneliness, the man searches for an explanation by talking with several legendary and historical Vietnamese women, whom he paints portraits of. Heroine Trung Trac, poet Ho Xuan Huong and some characters from traditional tuong drama and the poetry of Ho Nguyet Co all make appearances. Written and directed by Nguyen Thi Minh Ngoc with music by Tran Vuong Thach and Hai Phuong, The Missing Woman is a mixture of various Vietnamese traditional stage arts such as cai luong, hat boi, cheo and traditional poetry readings. Young Vietnamese models Tuyet Lan and Hoang Thuy made their international fashion debut walking for this year’s Autumn -Winter New York Fashion Week, currently taking place in the city. Lan and Thuy, coming out as the first runner-up and winner of the first two seasons of Vietnam’s Next Top Model in 2010 and 2011 are invited to walk in two collections by Liberian designer Korto Momolu and New Yorker designer Laurel DeWit.
