HÀ NỘI — A Việt Nam-based football consultancy company has signed a deal to represent former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Touré.

Harcus Consultancy Group announced they would represent the former Ivory Coast international interests in Southeast Asia in “brand development, player sponsorship/endorsements and more”, the group said yesterday.

CEO of Harcus Consultancy Group Richard Harcus said: “Yaya Touré already has a great PR and marketing team behind him in Europe, dedicated to ensure they always do what’s right for him.

“I can speak for everyone here when I say, we are delighted to be working with Yaya Touré for the ASEAN region and assisting his other partners, where we can, to ensure that this high level of service continues.”

The Scotsman added that looking for a new club for the Premier League, La Liga, Champions League and Africa Cup of nations winner in Asia would be part of representing him, as the midfielder left Chinese side Qingdao Huanghai last November and is currently a free agent.

“This (developing Touré’s fan base in ASEAN) starts by looking to keep his playing career in Asia.

“He has just finished his contract in China and we would love to keep him here by assisting in getting him a club where the Asian fans can continue to watch him,” Harcus said.

Harcus Consultancy Group is a Việt Nam and Singapore-based firm that offers football schools and clubs across Southeast Asia services in football and commercial operations, and education/careers.

The firm now counts among its partners the likes of Rangers FC of Scotland, AZ Alkmaar of the Netherlands and five-time Singapore top-flight champions Tampines Rovers FC. — VNS

Older villagers given key role in community tourism

September 27, 2020 by vietnamnet.vn

Regular visitors to Hoa Tien Village in the north-central province of Nghe An’s Quy Chau District would no doubt have seen some of their professional young tour guides in action.

But community tourism in the village, which has won a place on the national tourism map as an attractive destination, struggled to find success without older villagers also working as tour guides.

Older villagers given key role in community tourism

The idea of involving older villagers in tourism activities was first raised in 2014, when the Thai Cultural Conservation Club was established by a group of local Thai ethnic minority people.

From an initial eight members, who shared the same pastime of singing Thai folk songs, the club has now grown to 38, including some who have been awarded the title “Excellent Master Singer”, like Sam Thi Vinh aged 71.

The club is not only active in folk singing and dancing but also in tourism promotion.

Club leader Lo Duc Mau said its members are now operating in groups that specialise in certain cultural activities, including preserving the Thai minority’ language, spiritual customs and folk music.

After noting the need for local involvement, provincial tourism authorities encouraged some of the older members of the club, who are knowledgeable about the village’s traditions and culture, to be part of a project developing community tourism in the province by working as tour guides.

“Working as a tour guide is also an opportunity for these people to contribute to promoting traditional cultural values in their village while increasing their earnings,” according to Sam Thy Xanh, a club member now working as a tour guide.

Formerly a teacher and among the first of the elders to become a tour guide, Xanh said she was excited to be selected by provincial authorities to be part of the project on developing community tourism in Hoa Tien Village.

“I accepted it as my new mission in life, because I saw that people had trust in me,” she said. “But I also thought it would be fun and I could add whatever I could from my own experience.”

She started out part-time and after several years of mounting passion, enthusiasm, and responsibility now loves the job.

“Through my daily contact with visitors and other people, I grew into the job,” Xanh said.

“I can talk with people from all around the country and even from abroad, passing on what I know about my own village. It’s also a chance to promote a love of our culture and traditions.”

As most tourists to Hoa Tien want to capture the unique cultural identity of the Thai, the village tour guides have worked to sharpen their own knowledge, according to Xanh.

She has also tried to co-operate with travel agencies to create new tours featuring different cultural activities, to attract more visitors.

“New activities are being created to meet the increasing demand of visitors to understand our village,” Xanh said. “Sometimes we stage an actual Thai folk music performance right where they are staying.”

“Visitors can not only listen to and even practise singing our folk songs and dances, but can also take part in weaving brocade and then enjoy a traditional meal.”

Lo Thi Nga, another tour guide from Hoa Tien Village, said she and her daughter are pleased to be part of community tours to the village.

The two are now managing their family’s traditional stilt house, which has been converted to provide homestay services.

Guests will quickly see the ingenuity the two women possess in connecting visitors with village life. Also a member of the club, Nga is among the elderly villagers with the traditional occupation of brocade weaving, which her guests are excited to experience during their time in the village.

As for being a tour guide, Nga is happy to take part in developing tourism in the village.

“Many tourists have chosen to stay with us since we opened the homestay,” she said. “We not only earn a better income but also get to introduce our Thai culture and traditional values to more and more people.”

Members of the club, from young to old, are regarded as “messengers” of Thai culture, and a variety of art performances are arranged whenever a group of visitors is expected.

Local women have also become chefs, cooking traditional dishes for guests to experience.

The way the cultural club in Hoa Tien Village operates is being adopted elsewhere in the province and has already reached the provincial level, with members coming from other villages and communes.

The efforts of members have been recognised by provincial authorities as making a contribution to preserving traditional values, presenting the unique culture of the Thai people in Quy Chau District to visitors from all over the world.

Homestay a unique option

Located in the western part of Nghe An Province, Hoa Tien Village and indeed Quy Chau District are endowed with beautiful natural landscapes and are home to the Thai ethnic minority, with unique culture and traditions based on rice cultivation and textile and woodwork crafts.

The Thai women in the village have a deserved reputation for their folk music performances and especially their brocade weaving, which has been a local occupation for many generations.

Travel companies and local residents have come together to provide attractive homestay tours, with the best option being a night or two right in the village.

Thai brocade products were originally made just for family needs and as dowry for brides. The local women are adept at weaving silk and cotton and using herbs, flowers, leaves, and bark as natural dyes, adding unique value to their products.

A variety of activities meeting every taste awaits visitors to Hoa Tien. They will have the chance to enjoy local dishes and wine, try to weave brocade, or take part in bamboo dancing and folk singing.

Foreign visitors are drawn to the village out of curiosity about the cultures of different ethnic groups in general and of the Thai in particular, so these local activities add a particularly worthwhile dimension to any visit.

Many foreign visitors leave impressed by the professionalism and enthusiasm of the old local tour guides.

Homestay is, indeed, the preferred accommodation for most foreign visitors to the western part of Nghe An, which exposes them first-hand to local life and culture.

One tourist, Jagli Lena from Switzerland, said she took part in many of the traditional activities but loved the bamboo dancing the most.

Vietnam has 54 different ethnic groups, each with its own customs, traditions, and handicrafts.

A number of villages have sadly lost their traditional handicrafts due to cultural exchanges and rapid economic development. Hoa Tien Village, however, with its original Thai culture and traditions, remains a popular destination due in no small part to its older tour guides.

Preserving the charm of ancient ‘Then’ tunes

May 6, 2020 by vietnamnet.vn

People’s Artisan Mong Thi Sam from Lang Son Province has devoted more than 63 years to preserving the ancient tunes of ‘Then’ folk singing, a cultural and spiritual heritage of Tay and Nung ethnic groups.

Preserving the charm of ancient ‘Then’ tunes

People’s Artisan Mong Thi Sam has devoted more than 63 years to preserving the ancient tunes of ‘Then’ folk singing.

Sam was born in 1939 Po Tang Hamlet, Hop Thanh Commune, Cao Loc District, which is the cradle of Then singing in Lang Son Province. The land, which possesses rich tradition and culture, has long been home to the Nung ethnic group.

Raised in a family with eight consecutive generations of practicing Then singing, Sam has heard and was taught to sing sweet Then melodies and play the Tinh (gourd lute) since she was a little girl.

Not only mastering popular Then rituals such as the baby’s one-month celebration, a ritual to pray for peace and prosperity, and a ritual to dispel bad luck, Sam can also host ancient Then rituals including the ‘Cap Sac’ ritual, a rite of passage declaring the coming-of-age of men within the community, and the grand Then ritual.

She has learned by heart the lyrics and melodies of Then songs in every stage of different rituals.

Therefore, Then rituals hosted by Mong Thi Sam attract many viewers and have become a venue for cultural exchange in the community.

According to People’s Artist Trieu Thuy Tien, Vice Chair of the Association for preserving Lang Son Province’s folk music, Then masters are not only talented artists but also “living museums” who can tell a lot about their groups’ religious and cultural heritage.

Tien said that Mong Thi Sam is considerably respected and admired in the community as is a living archive of thousands of Then lines, which are sung in assorted rituals conveying people’s wishes in their lives.

Not only does she have a time-honoured and passionate attachment to Then singing, Sam has also been active in teaching and spreading Then melodies in her community.

Sam has written down ancient Then lyrics to prevent them from being lost and teaches them to members of local Then singing clubs. Her collections are also a valuable source of reference for researchers and those who want to learn more about the folk singing.

She has travelled to many localities across the country, including the provinces of Thai Nguyen, Bac Giang, Lam Dong and Dak Lak, to inspire her love for Then singing to the Tay and Nung ethnic groups there.

Director of the Lang Son Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Phuc Ha hailed Mong Thi Sam as a veteran artisan of Then singing and Tinh lute playing.

She has enthusiastically participated in cultural and arts activities and festivals in the locality, where she has gained high prizes.

In 2019, she was awarded the People’s Artisan title in recognition of her devotion to safeguarding and promoting the unique cultural value of Then folk singing. Nhan Dan
