Vietnam calls for restraint amid US House Speaker’s Taiwan visit

August 3, 2022 by tuoitrenews.vn

Vietnam adheres to the ‘one-China’ policy and hopes the relevant parties to exercise restraint and not to escalate tension in the Taiwan Strait area, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday. The foreign ministry’s spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang was speaking at a press briefing in Hanoi in response to reporters’ questions about the current situation of the Taiwan Strait. Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, had landed in Taiwan for a visit on Tuesday. Reiterating that Vietnam continues to follow the ‘one China’ policy, Hang requested all relevant parties to contain themselves and contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the region and the world. ‘One-China’ means “there is but one China in the world,” stated the Chinese Embassy in Vietnam. Taiwan is an inseparable part of China’s territory and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government representing the entirety of China, the embassy stressed. … [Read more...] about Vietnam calls for restraint amid US House Speaker’s Taiwan visit

ASEAN ministers urge restraint after Pelosi Taiwan visit

August 4, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

Pelosi's dramatic trip to Taipei, defying stark threats by China, overshadowed a meeting of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers in Phnom Penh, which had been expected to focus on the bloody crisis engulfing Myanmar. ASEAN spokesman Kung Phoak, Cambodia's deputy foreign minister, said ministers at the closed-door talks - meeting face to face for the first time since the pandemic - had expressed concern over "growing tension in the Taiwan Strait." "We hope that all sides will try their best to deescalate the tension there, avoid actions that may contribute to the escalation of tension and engage in dialogue," Kung Phoak told reporters. Malaysia and Thailand echoed the calls for calm, with Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah urging all sides to tread "very carefully." Thai foreign ministry spokesman Tanee Sangrat said the kingdom called for "utmost restraint" and warned against "any actions that would aggravate tensions." Attention will now … [Read more...] about ASEAN ministers urge restraint after Pelosi Taiwan visit

China begins major Taiwan military drills after Pelosi visit

August 4, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

China's largest-ever military exercises encircling Taiwan kicked off Thursday, in a show of force straddling vital international shipping lanes after a visit to the island by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi left Taiwan Wednesday after a trip that defied a series of stark threats from Beijing, which views the self-ruled island as its territory. It sparked a furious reaction from Beijing, which vowed "punishment" and announced military drills in the seas around Taiwan -- some of the world's busiest waterways. "Six major areas around the island have been selected for this actual combat exercise and during this period, relevant ships and aircraft should not enter the relevant waters and airspaces," state broadcaster CCTV reported. Taiwan's defense ministry said it was closely watching the drills. Beijing's nationalist state-run tabloid Global Times said, citing military analysts, that the exercises were "unprecedented" and that missiles would fly over Taiwan for the … [Read more...] about China begins major Taiwan military drills after Pelosi visit

Thousands of fans stood in the rain for hours to cheer their idols. Bob and Clint, two members of the boyband, visited Sa Pa, around 320 kilometers from Hanoi, earlier this month and shot a music video there to promote tourism. They stayed at the Ville de Mont Mountain Resort, which stands 1,500 meters above sea level overlooking the Muong Hoa Valley and Ham Rong Mountain. Bob posted a photo of terraced rice fields on his Instagram account. The rice fields have become a major tourist attraction in the northern highlands. On Sunday, Dave, another member of the boyband, posted on his Instagram account a video of himself walking along HCMC's Bui Vien Street, once famous as a backpacker haunt, but now equally popular with locals.
