Vietnamese universities are reluctant to build brands, said Dr. Vu Thi Phuong Anh, arguing that the resistance could be the kiss of death in an increasingly globalized and commercialized world. "In some cases, the word 'brand' is even being avoided," said Dr. Anh from the Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City's Center for Educational Testing and Quality Assessment. She was speaking at a two-day conference titled "Branding in Higher Education: Practices and Lessons Learned from Global Perspectives." The event, hosted by the Southern Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), ended Tuesday in Nha Trang Town, the central province of Khanh Hoa. Ho Chi Minh National University has completed a project to build the German-Vietnamese University (GVU). The modestly large-scale project is under an educational cooperation between the German state of Hessen’s Science and Technology Ministry and the Vietnamese Education and Training Ministry. The university will provide training courses in natural sciences, technology, social and economic sciences, and medicine-pharmaceuticals. English will be initially taught to GVU’s subjects, but German will be compulsory from the first term for Vietnamese students, who will also have to take exams in German for their graduation in Vietnam or Germany. Vietnamese universities fail to attract the most excellent and the richest students, because they choose to go studying abroad when feeling disappointed about the domestic university education. According to Open Doors 2011, the number of Vietnamese students studying at the universities in the US in the 2010-2011 academic year increased from 13, 112 to 14,888 students. Vietnam now ranks the 8th among the countries which have the highest numbers of students studying in the US. Five years ago, it was at the 20th position.
