Various kinds of mooncakes with wholesale prices hovering around VND2,000-4,000 (US$0.09-0.17) apiece have been imported in large volumes from China into Vietnam ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The ingredients in mooncakes can easily go bad if they are not well preserved, posing a high health risk to consumers, according to experts. Meanwhile, designated agencies find it hard to control the quality of these products. Super cheap mooncakes As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, the mooncake market is always bullish. US envoy tastes Saigon’s broken rice
The U.S. Embassy in Hanoi last weekend shared a video on its Facebook page, showing the U.S. ambassador and food blogger Thuyen Vo trying the broken rice dish with grilled pork, bi (shredded pork skin) and cha (Vietnamese meatloaf with steamed pork, egg and other ingredients inside) at Moc's Restaurant in District 1. After trying the rice and the bi and the cha in his plate, using a pair of chopsticks, Knapper said in Vietnamese: "Rat la ngon!" ("Very delicious!") He said later in an embassy's statement: "It was great to have real com tam right here in Ho Chi Minh City with food blogger Thuyen Vo. Vietnam’s rice exports hit a record high
Vietnam’s rice remains favorite in the international market despite fierce competition. Vietnam exported nearly 4.2 million tons of rice during the first seven months of 2022, representing an increase of over 20% year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development (MARD). During the January-July period, Vietnam exported 4.19 million tons of rice for over US$2 billion, an increase of 20.5% year-on-year in volume and 9% in value. Among Vietnam’s major markets, the US recorded the highest growth with an increase of 65.3% in rice imports during the first half, followed by the Philippines with 48.6%.
