The third Vietnamese Student Sports Festival in the Republic of Korea (RoK) came to an end on August 22. The event was organised by the Vietnamese Students’ Association in the Republic of Korea (VSAK) to celebrate the 65 th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day, the 1,000 th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi and to promote solidarity and mutual understanding between Vietnamese students in universities and research institutes across the RoK. The annual festival attracted 60 delegations of Vietnamese students from different parts of the RoK to compete in football, badminton, table-tennis and athletics. The final round of competition was held at Ulsan University on August 22, along with a cultural exchange featuring the youth’s vitality and spirit of patriotism. Vietnamese students across Australia gathered at a gala night at the New South Wales University on August 1, showing off their singing, dancing, poem reciting and acting skills. A Vietnamese team from Curtin University won the first prize for their play “Warm hearts” that featured young people who live away from home, and their difficulties, worries and homesickness. Addressing the event, the Vietnamese Deputy Consul General in Sydney, Tran Quoc Khanh, said that the gala gave students in Australia an opportunity to exchange information and increase their mutual understanding. This was the second Vietnamese student group to visit Japan under the programme held by the association of international human resource development of small and medium-sized enterprises (IMM Japan), said Takashi Kazama, Head of the IMM Japan’s Overseas Management Division. The programme aims to enhance mutual understanding among high school students as well as people of both countries, thus promoting cooperation between the two countries, he added. While in Japan from June 30-July 10, the students together with their peers from the Yokohama International High School in Kanagawa prefecture took part in an environmental protection workshop and cultural exchanges. Different opinions have been cited to explain the downgrading of the Vietnamese students’ achievements at International Olympiads. However, mathematicians have agreed that the most important thing in teaching mathematics is not giving tricks to solve mathematics questions, but to arouse the love for mathematics. The modest achievements gained by the Vietnamese students at the latest Mathematics Olympiad have shocks to many people, who always believe that Vietnam has been listed among the most mathematics powerful countries. All the six students attending the 52nd Mathematics Olympiad got medals, but no one won a gold medal. The Vietnamese team ranked the 31st out of the 90 teams of students attending the competition. Vietnam has long since taken pride about its achievements at international mathematics, physics, informatics, biology, and chemistry Olympiads. However, a downward trend has appeared in the last few years. All the six students attending the 52nd Mathematics Olympiad got medals, but no one won gold medal.
