Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem beat his Indian rival Raunak Sadhwani after 58 moves in the final round of the 2019 Sharjah Masters International Chess Championship in the UAE. With only six points after nine rounds, Liem ranked 20th at the tournament. He retained his Elo at 2,703, standing at 36th in the world rankings. Meanwhile, Liem’s teammate Nguyen Anh Khoi lost to Alireza Firouzja of Iran in the last round. Khoi ranked 15th at the championship and his Elo would be raised to 2,504 in April, one of the conditions for him to obtain the Grandmaster title. Earlier, Khoi defeated Liem after 45 moves in the eighth round at the 2019 Sharjah Masters International Chess Championship. Grandmaster Liem (Elo 2715) tied with Ernesto Inarkiev of Russia (Elo 2692), who tops the rankings, after 29 moves in the fifth round, while International Master Nguyen Anh Khoi (Elo 2484) tied with Grandmaster Sanan Sjugirov of Russia (Elo 2667) after 19 moves. International Master Nguyen Anh Khoi (Elo 2,484) managed a shock win against Grandmaster Ganguly Surya Shekhar of India (Elo 2,633) in the fourth round of the event on March 25 after 41 moves. The 17-year-old has so far earned 3.5 points after four matches to rank 10th out of 150 players, a mere 0.5 points lower than the current leading chess master, Inarkiev Ernesto of Russia (Elo 2,695). Two Vietnamese representatives, Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Anh Khoi, have won their first two matches of the ongoing 2019 Sharjah Masters international chess tournament in the United Arab Emirates to join 28 other contenders in the leading group with two points. Vietnam's no. 1 chess player Le Quang Liem Quang Liem (Elo 2715) is named the no. 3 seed in the competition, behind top seed Wang Hao of China (Elo 2718) and second seed Vladimir Fedoseev of Russia (Elo 2715).
