Vietnamese Ambassador to Singapore Tao Thi Thanh Huong (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – There is substantial room for Vietnam and Singapore to further develop their strategic partnership, according to Vietnamese Ambassador to Singapore Tao Thi Thanh Huong. The diplomat said that bilateral relations have strongly developed over the past 45 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1973. In September 2013, the two countries issued a joint statement establishing the bilateral strategic partnership on the occasion of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s visit to Vietnam. The two sides have achieved many practical outcomes across a wide range of fields from politics, security, defence and economy, to education and training, culture and people-to-people exchanges. Attending the Vietnam-Singapore Business Forum with some 700 delegates attending in the framework of an official visit to Singapore, Phuc said that in just five years after the establishment of strategic partnership, Singaporean investors have pledged US$43 billion in more than 2,000 projects in Vietnam. PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc (middle) at the Vietnam-Singapore Business Forum (Source: VNA) Addressing the Vietnam-Singapore Business Forum on April 26th, which brought together about 700 delegates from both sides, the PM highlighted the practical foundation for the bilateral collaboration, which was laid by late Singaporean PM Lee Kuan Yew who supported the construction of the first Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) in Vietnam’s southern Binh Duong province in 1992. Five years after the establishment of the Vietnam-Singapore strategic partnership, Singapore now has more than 2,000 projects with total investment capital of over USD43 billion in Vietnam, and two-way trade has reached nearly USD8.5 billion, PM Phuc said, adding that up to 280,000 Singaporean tourists visited Vietnam each year. The Singapore visit by PM Phuc occurs at a time when the two countries are celebrating the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties and the fifth anniversary of the establishment of strategic partnership.
