Vietnam to start Covid-19 inoculation next Monday: health minister

March 5, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

The move came following Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s order , requiring the poor, families under preferential treatment and some prioritized groups approved by the government to be inoculated with the Covid-19 vaccine quickly.

The first batch of 30 million vaccines Vietnam ordered from AstraZeneca arrived in Ho Chi Minh City on a flight from Seoul last Wednesday. After working with South Korea to evaluate the quality of the batch, the health ministry said the vaccine is eligible for inoculation, Long told a Friday meeting.

On Saturday, the ministry will host a conference on the implementation of large-scale vaccination, nationwide training on receiving, using and preserving vaccines, as well as handling post-vaccination complications.

Two days later, those directly treating Covid-19 patients at 18 medical facilities and prioritized categories of people in 13 pandemic-hit localities, with Covid-19 epicenter Hai Duong given the highest priority, will be among the first to be vaccinated.

In April, Vietnam would receive an additional 1.3 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine through Covax, a global mechanism for developing, manufacturing and procuring Covid-19 vaccines and supply for member countries.

Long said the vaccination does not guarantee 100 percent immunity against Covid-19.

According to AstraZeneca, the vaccine is 76 percent effective, with the second shot measured at 81 percent.

Therefore, Long stressed everyone continues complying with pandemic prevention measures.

Earlier, the government had approved a list of prioritized groups to be vaccinated against Covid-19, which included frontline medical workers, military, and police forces.

Others in the priority list are teachers, diplomatic personnel, customs and immigration officers, those working in essential services like transport, people aged 65 and above, and those with chronic diseases that make them more vulnerable to the disease.

Those seeking to study or work abroad or are living in pandemic-hit areas are also listed.

While the production of domestic vaccines is underway, the government has speeded up foreign procurement to inoculate prioritized groups.

The government has said it is stepping up negotiations with vaccine manufacturers in the U.S., Russia and some other countries to ensure it could obtain a total 150 million doses to cover 70 percent of its population.

It has also approved the use of Moderna and Sputnik V vaccines.

Vietnam, a country of 98 million people, has reported 879 community transmissions in 13 cities and provinces during the ongoing outbreak that returned to the country on Jan. 28 after a 55-day clean streak.

What COVID-19 vaccine is available in Vietnam and who can get it?

March 5, 2021 by vietnamlife.tuoitrenews.vn

Vietnam is expected to secure 90 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine in 2021 and has already announced a list of target groups eligible to receive the first available shots.

The Southeast Asian country received its first COVID-19 vaccine shipment on February 24 – a batch of 117,600 doses of COVID-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca, a British-Swedish multinational pharmaceutical company, and the University of Oxford.

The Ministry of Health said last week that the country aims to obtain 90 million COVID-19 vaccine doses by the end of the year, including 30 million through the COVAX scheme co-led by WHO, 30 million through AstraZeneca, and the rest through negotiations with U.S. producers.

Talks were also taking place to secure Russia’s Sputnik V jab, the ministry added.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has requested the Ministry of Health to begin COVID-19 vaccination for prioritized groups by the end of this week.

As soon as the proper logistics are in place, vaccinations will be rolled out in provinces and cities with ongoing pandemic outbreaks, urban areas with large populations, and important transport hubs.

Health workers and employees of steering committees for COVID-19 prevention and control in these localities will be among the first to be immunized.

Vietnam is also developing four COVID-19 vaccines on its own.

Among them, Nanocovax, developed by Ho Chi Minh City-based Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology JSC, entered its second phase of human trials on February 26.

Target groups

According to Resolution No. 21 issued by the central government on February 26, the target groups prioritized to receive COVID-19 vaccinations are:

– Frontline workers (health workers, staff members of all-level steering committees for COVID-19 responses, employees of quarantine facilities, and reporters, among others)

– Diplomats, customs officers, and export-import officers

– Military forces

– Public security forces

– Teachers

– People aged above 65

– Those who work in essential service sectors including aviation, transport, tourism, and utility services

– People with chronic illnesses

– People who must travel abroad for work or study

– Residents in pandemic-hit areas

COVID-19 vaccination to begin in Vietnam on March 8

March 5, 2021 by en.nhandan.org.vn

Earlier, more than 117,600 doses of the vaccine, manufactured in the Republic of Korea (RoK), arrived in Vietnam on February 24. After holding working sessions with the producer, Vietnam has obtained an accreditation certificate for the batch from the RoK.

Long said the doses, verified by the ministry, meet the conditions for vaccination in Vietnam.

As scheduled, on March 6, the Health Minister will chair a conference to launch the vaccination plan and provide related training for medical staff nationwide in the use and storage of the vaccine, as well as the handling of post-injection complications.

According to the official, priority in vaccination will be given to people at the front line of the fight against COVID-19, including health, army, police, customs and immigration personnel; those working in sectors offering essential services like aviation, transport, tourism and education; people with chronic illnesses or above 65 years old; those living in pandemic-hit areas; the poor and beneficiaries of social welfare policy.

People getting the shots will be monitored via digital health records and receive e-certificates for their completion of inoculation.

Vietnam plans to import about 150 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines this year.

Among the patients undergoing treatment, 65 have tested negative for the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 once, 57 twice, and 137 thrice.
