Worries about the side effects of COVID-19 vaccines and the quality of children’s jabs with extended expiration dates have made parents in Ho Chi Minh City hesitant to have their children vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to a recent survey. The municipal Center for Disease Control (HCDC) on Thursday announced the results of a rapid survey of 2,792 parents on vaccinations for children aged five to under 18 years old who are attending schools in 22 districts of the city. Of these parents, 76 percent have kids aged five to under 12, and the rest have children from 12 to less than 18 years old. Out of the more than 2,100 children aged five to below 12 involved in the survey, 34 percent had yet to be immunized, 33 percent had received their first vaccine shots, and the other 33 percent had gotten their third jabs. Vietnam recorded nearly 3,300 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest daily count in more than three months, with the Ministry of Health attributing the resurgence to the new fast-spreading Omicron sub-variants. The health ministry documented 3,295 COVID-19 patients on Thursday, raising the national tally to 11,376,571, with 10,049,215 recoveries and 43,103 deaths. The country has so far detected four Omicron sub-variants including BA.4, BA.5, BA.2.12.1, and BA.2.74, which are more transmissible than the original strain, according to the General Department of Preventive Medicine under the health ministry. At Hanoi’s COVID-19 treatment hospital, the number of patients has bounced back in the past week. The facility is providing treatment for about 35-37 patients, most of whom have underlying conditions. In Vietnam, since the beginning of this year, natural disasters have been increasingly irregular, with unseasonal rains and flooding accompanied by thunder storms , strong winds and storms. From March 30 to April 2, heavy rain in the central region caused widespread damage, especially to agricultural production. Once Vietnam dropped its on-arrival COVID-19 testing requirement for foreign travelers and reopened its international air routes in mid-May, the number of foreigners entering the country began to increase, paving the way for foreign enclaves in Ho Chi Minh City to return to their pre-pandemic life. The report was announced at a workshop on digital skills education at schools in Vietnam jointly held by the VNIES, the Vietnet Information Technology and Communication Centre (Vietnet-ICT) and Meta – Facebook’s parent company – in Hanoi on August 19.
