Vietnam named in Agility’s top 10 Emerging Markets Logistics Index 2021

February 28, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Vietnam’s rise of three ranking positions to 8th overall is the fastest rise in the top half of the Index and displaces regional partner Thailand in the top 10.

Vietnam moved up three places to 8th in the top 10 countries of the Emerging Markets Logistics Index 2021 by Agility, one of the world’s top freight forwarding and contract logistics providers.

Among countries in ASEAN, Vietnam stood at third behind Indonesia (3rd overall) and Malaysia (5th), and was above the likes of Thailand (11th), the Philippines (21st) and Cambodia (41st).

According to Agility, Vietnam’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic has been one of the most successful globally, with data from Johns Hopkins University showing less than 1,500 reports of Covid-19 cases in the country in 2020.

The combination of social and economic restrictions with a strict and comprehensive testing and tracing system, saw lockdowns last less than three months, and by June many factories were reopened and domestic operations were recovering quickly, it said.

“The steps taken by Vietnam in 2020 propel it into the top 10 ranking in 2021 – its rise of three ranking positions to 8th overall is the fastest rise in the top half of the Index and displaces regional partner Thailand in the top 10,” stated the logistics firm.

“The country’s economy has performed well as a result of the minimal domestic disruptions and is set to be one of the best performing globally in 2020,” noted the report.

The foundation provided by the strong performance in 2020 is expected to underpin a 2021 expansion of 6.5% as domestic and international conditions normalize and the Covid-19 pandemic recedes.

In recent years, Vietnam has added significant hightech manufacturing capacity, helping attract investment from producers higher up the value chain as costs in China increased.

The option to avoid additional costs associated with the US-China trade war has added further motivation for manufacturers to choose Vietnam, noted Agility.

Samsung, which alone contributes a quarter of Vietnam’s exports through smartphone manufacturing activity in the country, will shift PC manufacturing to Vietnam after it shut down a Chinese factory in 2020. Apple is also reported to have requested that Foxconn open a Vietnam production location to add production capacity for iPads and MacBooks.

When the production lines become active in the first half of 2021, it will be the first time iPad manufacture to take place outside China. Meanwhile, chip manufacturer Intel will operate its largest assembly plant in the country and South Korea’s LG electronics announced investment plans during 2020.

With Covid-19 further exposing the risks of over-reliance on China, Vietnam will be an attractive option for relocation – indeed, when asked, 19.2% of survey respondents cited Vietnam as the number one location for those seeking to diversify production locations outside of China.

However, so rapid has the investment and arrival of new businesses been that it is creating challenges of its own, including a shortage of skills and knowledge to produce the highest value goods.

Navigos Group, which owns the country’s largest jobs site, reports that 71% of employers cite a lack of IT skills as their most significant challenge.

By 2025, the country set the contribution rate target for logistics to be at 5-6% of GDP, services growth rate between 15-20%, while the rate for logistics outsourcing to be 50-60%, said the government’s decision No.200 referring to an action plan to enhance the competitiveness and development of Vietnam’s logistics sector through 2025 and ensure its ran in the Logistics Performance Index of at least 50th.

Meanwhile, the number of death remains unchanged at 35.

More than 60,600 people including those returning from the pandemic-hit areas and those in close contact with Covid-19 patients have been under quarantine, including at hospitals, at quarantine sites, and at home.

Ten affected cities and provinces including Hoa Binh, Dien Bien, Ha Giang, Binh Duong, Hung Yen, Bac Giang, Gia Lai, Bac Ninh, Quang Ninh, and Ho Chi Minh City have undergone 16 consecutive days without any locally-transmitted infections, while Hanoi has recorded 14 straight days of no new cases.

As planned, Vietnam will conduct from March the second human trial for COVIVAC Covid-19 vaccine developed by Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (IVAC) of Vietnam.

Vingroup, the leading private conglomerate in Vietnam, has financed VND20 billion (US$869,000) for the development of COVIVAC vaccine.

Jakarta (VNA) – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Canada and UN Women recently launched a five-year programme to expand and strengthen women’s leadership and participation in conflict prevention, resolution and recovery in Southeast Asia.

The 8.5 million CAD (6.36 million USD) programme, “Empowering women for sustainable peace: preventing violence and promoting social cohesion in ASEAN”, is funded by Global Affairs Canada to support ASEAN and the implementation of the ASEAN-Canada Plan of Action 2021-2025, with the support of UN Women as a lead UN partner.

“ Canada is proud to launch this flagship initiative that uses the women, peace and security approach to promote inclusive and sustainable peace and security in the region, while addressing the systemic gender inequality,” said Diedrah Kelly, Canada’s Ambassador to ASEAN .

ASEAN has made important strides to advance women, peace and security agenda, including the adoption of the first ‘Joint Statement on Promoting Women, Peace and Security in ASEAN’ in 2017, the launch of the ASEAN Women’s Peace Registry in 2018, and convening the first ASEAN Symposium on Women, Peace and Security in 2019 and the ASEAN Ministerial Dialogue on Strengthening Women’s role for Sustainable Peace and Security in 2020.

Secretary-General of ASEAN Dato Lim Jock Hoi said, “ASEAN is working concertedly to advance women, peace and security agenda across the three ASEAN Community Pillars as part of our commitment to promote gender equality and the roles of women in the implementation of the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework.”

The COVID-19 impact has increased the risks for women and girls in fragile and conflict-affected contexts and this challenges us to re-examine threats to human security. “The pandemic highlights the important linkage between peace, humanitarian and development and the critical need for women’s leadership and participation to ensure effective and comprehensive response, from policy decision-making to peace building and pandemic response,” said Jamshed Kazi, UN Women Representative and Liaison to ASEAN.

The new programme reflects the commitment of ASEAN and Canada to promote gender equality and to respond to an increasingly widespread call across the globe for women to be empowered to lead and participate in peace and development.

ASEAN includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam./.

Hanoi gets ready to welcome students back to school

February 27, 2021 by en.nhandan.org.vn

>>> Students in 52 provinces, cities come back to school

At an online meeting of the Hanoi Steering Committee for COVID-19 Response on February 26, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Chu Xuan Dung said the Hanoi Department of Education and Training had a written report, asking for the direction from the Hanoi authorities and the Ministry of Education and Training regarding the correct time to welcome back students.

The Hanoi People’s Committee requested the Hanoi Department of Education and Training develop detailed instructions for schools on medical declarations for students when returning to Hanoi from other localities as well as implementing COVID-19 preventative measures in schools.

This weekend, schools were asked to disinfect their campuses and prepare materials for the epidemic prevention, in addition to having a clear approach to managing students.

In the coming days, the capital city will relax its social distancing measures to help resume normal activities, but will continuously control, inspect and strictly handle violations of epidemic preventive measures.

On February 26, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City said it has requested educational units and institutions to build and organise the implementation of plans for epidemic prevention and control in accordance with current best practice, while regularly updating guidance at all levels for timely and effective implementation in each specific period.

The department also requires all officers, teachers and students to make a serious and honest medical report upon returning to school from early March, while organising additional medical declarations for inward travel to Ho Chi Minh City during the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year.

Many other provinces and cities have been actively implementing measures to help students return to school after the epidemic is once again under control. Hung Yen and Ba Ria – Vung Tau provinces are the latest to announce the date for students returning to school, starting from March 1.

On February 26, the An Giang Provincial People’s Committee approved a policy of supporting medical masks and hand sanitiser solution for disadvantaged Vietnamese-Khmer people in Cambodia. The Provincial People’s Committee assigned the Department of Health to assume prime responsibility and coordinate with the relevant agencies and the Khmer-Vietnam Association in Cambodia for effective implementation.

On the same day, Hai Phong city instructed its Department of Health to urgently coordinate with the city’s Military Command and local authorities to organise free COVID-19 tests for 2,717 eligible Hai Phong citizens to join the military service, with the test results arriving before March 1. At the same time, the People’s Committee of Hai Phong City requested the Department of Information and Communications strengthen its guidance on techniques and technologies to control medical declarations with QRCODE codes at COVID-19 control posts and public places, aimed at more effective and safe medical declarations.

Also on February 26, field hospital no. 3 (at Sao Do University campus no. 2) in Chi Linh city, Hai Duong province officially received its first COVID-19 patients for treatment. The hospital will accept all patients transferred from Hai Duong’s field hospital no. 1 so that the latter will return to its normal medical examination and treatment activities for more than 170,000 people in Chi Linh.

Boxer Nhi gears up for her world title shot

HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Thị Thu Nhi will have to wait till April for her chance to become the first Vietnamese world female boxing champion after her fight was delayed.

Instead of being dismayed, the pint-sized boxer has taken the delay as an opportunity to sharpen her technique to prepare for her date with destiny.

The World Boxing Organization (WBO) agreed to move the mini flyweight (48kg) title defence between Thu and Japanese boxer Etsuko Tada to April, about two months after it was scheduled to be held.

The delay was needed as Tada could not travel to Việt Nam in February due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the second time that the bout was postponed after being originally scheduled for last April in South Korea.

“It is sad that it was delayed again while I am in good mood and preparing well for it,” Nhi told Việt Nam News .

“However, thinking again I told myself that I would have more time to sharpen my skills and improve my tactics. It may help to increase my chances of winning,” she said.

Nhi is Việt Nam’s first WBO Asia Pacific Boxing champion after taking the title last February in Cambodia. She won on points after defeating Kanyarat Yoohanngoh of Thailand in a 10-round fight.

The 25-year-old lacks international experience in contrast to seasoned pro Tada who has fought for more than a decade and grabbed a number of titles.

“The Japanese fighter is really strong and a senior in this field compared to me,” Nhi said about her 39-year-old opponent. “But I also have my strong points. I am younger and confident. It is okay if I unfortunately lose in a match that I do my best. Then I will fight again in another match until I can win.”

“My coaches said my technique is fairly good so they asked me to spend more time on my physique because Japanese athletes have strong physique. Tada is 39 but she could knock out her rival in the ninth round.”

Nhi is training at the Cocky Buffalo Boxing Gym in HCM City under South Korean coach Kim Sang Bum .

Kim, in contrast to the style of the bombastic American, was guarded when asked about the title fight.

“The postponement is someway not good for Nhi because she was preparing to get to her best in February. Now with the sudden delay, she will have to adjust for the change including her spirit. The more she believes the better result she would get,” Kim told Việt Nam News .

“Her opponent, who is stronger and more experienced, will also have more time for the fight. She is also confident and can fight any time. I told my athlete to keep training and be comfortable but focused.”

Kim said Nhi cannot compare to Tada in some aspects but the Vietnamese fighter is very agile and has a good mind for boxing.

“The chance to win for Nhi is about 70 per cent. I think if she follows our tactics plus her confidence, winning is possible,” said Kim.

Southpaw Tada beat ex-WBA titleholder Ayaka Miyao to take the vacant WBO title last December.

Previously, she held this WBO belt in 2018, held the WBA title from 2009 to 2013 and the IBF crown from 2015 to 2017.

While Tada has recorded 26 matches with 20 wins (seven KOs), three draws and three losses, Nhi has fought four matches with four wins. A milestone in her career was a victory over three-time world champion Filipino Gretchen Abaniel at the Victory 8 Championship in 2018 in HCM City.

“My biggest push for this match is to be the first Vietnamese boxer to vie for a world title. If I win, I will make history for Việt Nam,” said An Giang Province-born Nhi. — VNS
