More than 71 percent of Vietnamese women are actively involved in the labor market, with the ratio of women with university degrees being 5 percentage points higher than men, according to data released at the recent Vietnam Business Forum. Women account for 48 percent of the workforce in Vietnam. A McKinsey study has found that women play an equal role in the labor market, and will help global GDP increase by $28 trillion by 2025. However, like in many other countries, they are paid less than men in Vietnam, with an estimate putting their wages at 12 percent lower than their male counterparts. These data highlighted the fact that Vietnam is yet to achieve gender parity in the market place. Studies have found that gender inequality is counterproductive for businesses. HCM City hosts Peace Culture Day
Representatives of a number of diplomatic agencies and international organizations in HCM City, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Vietnam and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNICEF) in Vietnam joined local students at the event. Archaeologists discover prehistoric relics inside northern Vietnam caves
Members of the Vietnam Archaeological Institute and the Bac Kan Museum have found that many places in the province’s Ba Be District have traces of human presence dating back 8,000-9,000 years. Trinh Nang Chung, head of the research team, said the overall study has determined that the relics are from the Hoa Binh Culture of the New Stone Age (Neolithic Era). In Puong Cave, a part of the Ba Be National Park, the team dug and explored a five-meter-square lake where they found vestiges of two old kitchens. The team has not detected any grave remains at the sites, so far. Nearly 100 relics, mostly stone and bone, were found almost throughout the cave areas. Stone tools like short axes, rough cutting tools and oval-shaped tools were crafted from pebbles found in rivers and streams, bearing characteristics of the Hoa Binh Culture, archaeologists say. Michelle Obama, Julia Roberts in Vietnam for girls’ education program
Former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and actress Julia Roberts are in Vietnam on behalf of the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance on a trip to spotlight girls’ education. The Obama Foundation is doing its first ‘Leaders: Asia-Pacific’ program in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from December 10 to 14, bringing together 200 leaders from 33 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region. Participants, who come from the public, private, and non-profit sectors, will join plenary sessions, skill-building workshops, and leadership training in the inaugural program.
