China's Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi has announced that his country will provide Vietnam with about US$3.1 million and 500,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to support pandemic prevention and control efforts in the Southeast Asian country. Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son joined talks with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday in Zhejiang Province, as part of his official visit to China from December 2 to 4. The two officials discussed measures to bolster the Vietnam-China comprehensive strategic partnership in the coming time. Vietnam’s Ministry of Health has received 500,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine offered by the Argentine government for the Southeast Asian country’s fight against COVID-19. Argentine Ambassador to Vietnam Luis Pablo Maria Beltramino handed over the donation, worth over US$2 million, to Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan at a ceremony held in Hanoi on Thursday. Thuan expressed his gratitude to the government and people of Argentina, as well as the Argentine Ministry of Health and the Argentine Embassy in Vietnam, for the vaccine aid. “We will use these vaccine doses in the most effective way to improve our people’s immunity, contributing to preventing and driving back the epidemic,” the official said. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has asked local authorities to strengthen surveillance to discover Covid-19 cases and any abnormal signs of clusters as a new coronavirus variant called Omicron has emerged. The World Health Organisation (WHO) on November 25, 2021 reported that the coronavirus variant it has named Omicron (B.1.1.529) was discovered in several African countries, such as South Africa and Botswana. The first patient was a 30-year-old man in South Africa. He had fatigue, body aches with a minor headache, and itching, but no sore throat, cough or loss of taste. According to scientists, the Omicron variant has 32 mutations in spike glycoprotein and is the most mutated of the SARS-CoV-2 viruses. It is predicted to spread faster than Delta. According to the Ministry of Health, Vietnam could record more Covid-19 outbreaks, especially in current weather conditions, which are favorable for the spread of the virus. In the fourth Covid-19 wave, which started in late April 2021, Vietnam has recorded 1,152,926 cases, including 1,150,625 locally-transmitted cases (99.8%). As many as 934,444 patients have recovered from the disease (81%), and 24,083 people died of the virus in 45 out of 63 provinces and cities in the country. According to the Ministry of Health, in the past seven days, some provinces reported an increase in the number of locally transmitted infections compared to the previous seven days, with an increase of 1,193 cases in Ho Chi Minh City and 1,096 cases in Ba Ria - Vung Tau. The localities that recorded a decrease in the number of infections in the community are Tien Giang with a decrease of 299 cases, An Giang with 185 cases and Ca Mau 28 cases. A total of 13,670 transmissions were recorded across the country, taking the number of nationwide infections since the start of the pandemic to 1,280,780. The country also recorded 200 further fatalities, bringing the death toll to 25,858. Of the new transmissions, 8,628 were community cases and nine were imported infections that were quarantined on arrival. HCM City again topped the list of new infections with 1,311, followed by Cần Thơ Province with 982 and Hà Nội with 791.
