Vietnam’s Ministry of Health has received 500,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine offered by the Argentine government for the Southeast Asian country’s fight against COVID-19. Argentine Ambassador to Vietnam Luis Pablo Maria Beltramino handed over the donation, worth over US$2 million, to Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan at a ceremony held in Hanoi on Thursday. Thuan expressed his gratitude to the government and people of Argentina, as well as the Argentine Ministry of Health and the Argentine Embassy in Vietnam, for the vaccine aid. “We will use these vaccine doses in the most effective way to improve our people’s immunity, contributing to preventing and driving back the epidemic,” the official said. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has asked local authorities to strengthen surveillance to discover Covid-19 cases and any abnormal signs of clusters as a new coronavirus variant called Omicron has emerged. The World Health Organisation (WHO) on November 25, 2021 reported that the coronavirus variant it has named Omicron (B.1.1.529) was discovered in several African countries, such as South Africa and Botswana. The first patient was a 30-year-old man in South Africa. He had fatigue, body aches with a minor headache, and itching, but no sore throat, cough or loss of taste. According to the Ministry of Health, Vietnam could record more Covid-19 outbreaks, especially in current weather conditions, which are favorable for the spread of the virus. In the fourth Covid-19 wave, which started in late April 2021, Vietnam has recorded 1,152,926 cases, including 1,150,625 locally-transmitted cases (99.8%). As many as 934,444 patients have recovered from the disease (81%), and 24,083 people died of the virus in 45 out of 63 provinces and cities in the country. According to the Ministry of Health, in the past seven days, some provinces reported an increase in the number of locally transmitted infections compared to the previous seven days, with an increase of 1,193 cases in Ho Chi Minh City and 1,096 cases in Ba Ria - Vung Tau. Hanoi has begun vaccination against Covid-19 for children aged 15-17. The injection rate has reached more than 90%. The Hanoi People's Committee on December 2 approved the proposal of the municipal Department of Education and Training, allowing all high school students to return to school from December 6. Accordingly, tenth, eleventh, twelfth graders and students of vocational and continuing education centers in 30 districts can join in-class teaching from Monday next week. These districts must not have recorded any Covid-19 infection over the past 14 days. The students will only attend either morning or afternoon classes each day, and at the selected schools there would be no mid-day meals. The Hanoi People’s Committee has decided to allow students of the fifth, sixth, ninth, tenth and twelfth grades living in 18 pandemic-free districts labeled "green zones" to return to school from November 8. There is still no specific plan for students in urban areas to resume in-person schooling.
