Officials examined a 35-year-old RoK national and discovered 418 used mobile phones in his personal luggage. The illegal batch of goods is estimated to be worth nearly 3 billion VND (128,300 USD). The male passenger boarded a flight from Seoul to Vietnam without declaring his luggage. Mobile phones, especially smartphones, have become an essential part of our daily lives. I can’t imagine going one day without touching my iPhone, as I need to make calls, reply to messages, draft emails, and scroll my social feeds. Of course, I’m already an adult. I first had my phone about 10 years ago when I was 16, and I felt okay with having it at that age. However, I believe that’s not the case these days as even my 10-year-old nephew has asked his father for a phone. Kang Joo Kyung, 35, was stopped at Tan Son Nhat International Airport last Thursday after customs officials checked his luggage and found 200 used cellphones worth VND1.6 billion ($68,915). Among the phones were brands popular in Vietnam, like Apple and Samsung. Having no valid documents for the phones, Kang confessed to the investigators he was hoping to sell the phones and earn some money. The case has been handed over them and will be pursued with further, police said Tuesday. In 2017, a Ho Chi Minh City court sentenced two South Korean men, Her Min Chul and Cho In Soo, to three years in jail each for smuggling 96 used cell phones to Vietnam.
