Photos of women wearing ‘non la,’ Vietnam’s traditional conical hat, taken by 17 female photographers from a club run by the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists (VAPA) are on display at the Ho Chi Minh City Photography Association (HOPA) headquarters in District 1. The exhibition, which features 74 stunning photos, is aptly named 'Non La in Life' and will be open to visitors at 122 Suong Nguyet Anh Street in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City until August 16. Despite the obstacles of health, age, and family responsibilities, the 17 female photographers still manage to find time to travel throughout the country in search of creative inspiration. The fruits of these efforts have earned them several awards in national and international photography competitions. The Vietnamese traditional ‘non la’ hat is woven with different types of readily available materials, such as palm leaves, tree bark, bamboo, and, mainly, conical leaves. It is used to cover the head and shield the … [Read more...] about Female photographers showcase ‘non la’ photos at Ho Chi Minh City exhibition

Hospitals are not dojos for doctors to practice self-defense
In 2002 a patient was admitted to our hospital with a severe stomachache and died despite our best efforts. The patient's family burst in brandishing knives and threatened to slash anyone wearing a white coat. Doctors and nurses had to take off their coats and make a run for it. Many years ago one of my colleagues received threats and gangsters waited outside the emergency ward for days. The colleague was forced to go in and out of the hospital through a landfill and the backdoor. One of the latest incidents happened late last month at the Gia Dinh People's Hospital in HCMC. A child choked on a fish bone and was brought to the hospital. All of her vital signs were normal and there were no signs of distress. The child was told to sit and wait until a specialist from the otorhinolaryngology department came and removed the bone. But five minutes later a doctor in the emergency ward was checking the CT scan of another patient when the girl's father came in, pushed him against the … [Read more...] about Hospitals are not dojos for doctors to practice self-defense

Make it easier to live and work in Vietnam, expats urge
Having coming to Vietnam five years ago to start a business, Dutchman Wouter Luijten has many good things to say about living in the country. "Vietnamese food and general hygiene are pretty good compared to some other countries I have lived in and there is enough work for people with knowledge." Given the ongoing inflation worldwide, Luijten said Vietnam remained "extremely affordable." However, he said Vietnam lags behind in policies that would make it easy for foreigners to work and live in the country. "The huge amount of paperwork in general is my largest negative point for Vietnam." In an email to VnExpress International , Luijten said he was currently outside Vietnam waiting for a new visa, "despite my investments in Vietnam and my very significant tax contributions to the country." "Immigration has been a mess after Covid and I'm not the only one. From visa agents I hear thousands of people are waiting for their resident permits to be processed," he said. Luijten … [Read more...] about Make it easier to live and work in Vietnam, expats urge
