US Consul General visits Tuoi Tre

April 8, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

United States Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Marie C. Damour visited Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper headquarters on Wednesday to speak with the daily’s leaders about its contributions to Vietnam-U.S. ties.

During her visit, Consul General Damour and Tuoi Tre ‘s Editor-in-Chief Le The Chu discussed their views on the cooperative relations between the two sides, particularly the newspaper’s active coverage during the 25th anniversary of Vietnam-U.S. bilateral relations.

The diplomat also used the visit as an opportunity to recognize Tuoi Tre ’s contributions in strengthening the Vietnam-U.S. relationship, sharing her hope that the relationship will continue to receive support from the newspaper well into the future.

The two sides also discussed Tuoi Tre ’s plans for its upcoming April 30 (Vietnam’s Reunification Day) special issue, as well as the newspaper’s ‘Making COVID-19 Vaccine Contributions with Tuoi Tre’ program – an initiative which began in February and has so far received more than VND8 billion (US$345,000) in donations from readers.

“I think it’s a wonderful project and I really commend Tuoi Tre for all of its efforts,” Consul General Damour said.

During her visit, she praised the success of Vietnam in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, stressing that the next step for the country is to increase its access to vaccines.

The diplomat also shared that she is looking forward to the release of coronavirus vaccines developed in Vietnam.

Formerly serving as the head of the consular department in Ho Chi Minh City from 2002 to 2004, Consul General Damour said she was surprised by the change of the city after she came back for her new position in 2019.

She said that the city’s breakthrough changes in infrastructure reflect the country’s economic and social development.

“Ho Chi Minh City is closer to the image of an international city compared to 17 or 19 years ago,” she remarked.

Damour also congratulated Vietnam on its chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council, which began on April 1 and illustrates the Southeast Asian country’s increasingly prominent role in the international community.

In response, Chu thanked her for such positive compliments regarding Vietnam and expressed his appreciation for her and the U.S. Consulate General’s contribution to the relationship between Hanoi and Washington.

He also affirmed that Tuoi Tre will continue to dedicate itself to promoting the good relations between the two countries.

The editor-in-chief also shared his hope that the connection between the newspaper and the U.S. diplomatic missions in Vietnam will continue to strengthen.

The meeting ended with a tour of the Tuoi Tre newsroom and a discussion on the newspaper’s improvements over the years.

According a statement the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City posted on Facebook on Thursday morning, Consul General Damour said she had had “a great time visiting Tuoi Tre newsroom and meeting with Editor-in-Chief Le The Chu to learn about how a newsroom operates.”

“I was amazed at Tuoi Tre newspaper’s fundraising program for the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines to inoculate all Vietnamese citizens.

“No country is safe from COVID-19 until every country is safe, which is why the United States and Vietnam are collaborating closely to end this pandemic!”

During a discussion with the editor-in-chief of Tuoi Tre , Le The Chu, the Consulate General shared he had done several meetings with agencies in Ho Chi Minh City to establish connections with the local media.

Acknowledging the diversity of this community, he hoped to deliver the merits of South Korean culture and people.

“After taking office in Vietnam, I have met a lot of representatives of Ho Chi Minh City. They mostly care about trade and the economic ties between the two countries. However, I believe, based on that foundation, we should learn and understand each other’s cultures and societies, in order to enhance our collaboration,” said Consulate General Kang.

Vietnam ranks fourth in top trading partners of South Korea, and the East Asia country is also the second biggest foreign investor in Vietnam.

This fact indicates the deep Vietnam-South Korea economic ties after 30 years of diplomatic relations.

Moreover, according to statistics from South Korea, Vietnam witnessed 4.3 million visits from South Koreans before the COVID-19 pandemic, which also means one in every 11 South Koreans has visited Vietnam.

Consulate General Kang acknowledged the potentials of the city are not only attractive to South Korea, but also the United States and European countries, especially in eco-smart city development.

With comprehensive experiences collected from the renovation program of Seoul, South Korea is expected to be a strong partner for Ho Chi Minh City in the field.

In particular, during last month, the city authorities held a conference with South Korean businesses to discuss prospects for cooperation in new future projects.

Regarding Tuoi Tre , the Korean Consulate General shared his expectation for the two sides to join hands in upcoming projects.

He also hoped that the two agencies would coordinate to share information about the lives of the Korean people and the activities of Korean businesses in Ho Chi Minh City in particular and Vietnam in general.

Agreeing with the views of the Korean Consulate General, Tuoi Tre ’s editor-in-chief insisted that human connection is the foundation for economic cooperation between Vietnam and South Korea.

“South Korean corporates not only contribute greatly to our economy, but also share with us their governance styles and technology, furthering the development of Vietnam”, Chu emphasized.

The editor-in-chief affirmed that the newspaper and the South Korean Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City have always maintained a good relationship up to now, and expressed the expectation that the mutual relationship would be even stronger in the future.
