Rescuer combats flood to save over 100 students in northern Vietnam
A disaster rescue officer managed to handle a serious flooding situation to take more than 100 students stranded at an isolated school to safety in the northern Vietnamese province of Tuyen Quang on Wednesday. A heavy rain submerged 38 houses and a large area of crops in water and swept nine buffaloes away in Tuyen Quang’s Lam Binh District in the small hours of that day, according to the committee for natural disaster prevention and search and rescue of Lam Binh District. The premises of Lam Binh Ethnic Minority Boarding Middle School and Lam Binh High School, which are located in a low area near a stream, were most affected and deep under water. The flooding situation confined more than 100 students to the school’s dormitory and caused a panic among them. Upon receiving a report on the incident at the Lam Binh School, Quan Ngoc Hoang, a private of the firefighting and disaster rescue division under the Tuyen Quang Department of Public Security, immediately hit the road to … [Read more...] about Rescuer combats flood to save over 100 students in northern Vietnam
Seeing Saigon on two wheels
A group of young people in Saigon are offering a different perspective on the city with their two-wheeled tours. Founded by Vo Hoang Phuc, Saigon Morning Ride has so far led about 100 tours across Saigon, the former name of Ho Chi Minh City but still popularly used now. “The more [tours] we do, the more interesting things we find in Saigon. Who said there was nothing exciting in Saigon?” Phuc said. Though Phuc believes it to be a shame that so few people are aware of all the interesting things to do in the city, he hopes to offer insights into Saigon’s hidden gems with tours of the city’s alleys, ancient tombs, rice roads, graffiti, Oc Eo Relic, and nighttime haunts. Cyclists take the ferry on the Saigon River early in the morning. Teachers go six months without paychecks in north-central Vietnam
A group of elementary school teachers in Vietnam are going on their sixth month straight of no paychecks even though the academic year has already concluded. The eight affected teachers were employed as contract workers during the 2021-22 school year, which ended last month, at Dong Linh Elementary School in north-central Thanh Hoa Province. They completed the assignments given by the school administration and their duties as per the conditions of their contracts, which specified that they would receive a monthly wage of VND2.78 million (US$120) each, as well as payment for teaching extra classes and monitoring semi-boarding students. The school fully paid the eight teachers from September to December last year, according to a contract teacher. “However, we’ve been paid nothing since January of this year,” one of the eight teachers said. "The school’s explanation was that they didn’t have it in their budget." In response to a request by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper … [Read more...] about Teachers go six months without paychecks in north-central Vietnam
This Saigon food stall sells savory sticky rice for just one dollar
Xoi man (savory sticky rice) is a staple of Vietnamese cuisine, universally loved for its inexpensive price and bold flavor. It is available in practically every neighborhood in Saigon from early morning to late at night. Sticky rice has long been a local favorite thanks to how long it keeps eaters full. Each stall has its own way of cooking different types of glutinous rice to get the perfect stickiness. Because of its high calorie content, glutinous rice's starch keeps diners full for longer than other starchy items like vermicelli, bread, and rice noodles. Although there are many xoi man stalls in the city, it is not always easy to find the perfect plate of this storied dish.
