HANOI -- Vietnam is aiming for economic growth of 7% this year, the country’s planning and investment minister said on Monday, higher than an official target of 6.0%-6.5% set previously. To achieve this, year-on-year economic growth in the third quarter needs to be 9.0% and in the fourth quarter 6.3%, minister Nguyen Chi Dung also said during a government meeting. Dung said Vietnam’s budget was in surplus, giving scope for fiscal policy to be used to support businesses and residents. “Credit institutions will need to further cut their lending interest rates to reduce input cost pressure for businesses and for the economy,” he said. Vietnam, a regional manufacturing hub, started lifting its coronavirus curbs late last year, allowing factories to resume full operations. A person went missing, three others were injured, and a lot of damage was recorded after a heavy rain swamped the northern Vietnamese province of Dien Bien on Sunday morning, the Vietnam News Agency reported, citing the provincial committee for natural disaster prevention and control. Rain started pouring down on Dien Bien at 6:00 am on Sunday and triggered a flood in Phi Linh Village, Nam Po District. The flood swept through a hydroelectric tunneling site, where four workers were working, causing one to go missing and injuring the other three. Rescuers arrived at the scene and gave first aid to the three injured workers shortly after, before transporting them to the nearby Muong Cha District medical center for further treatment. The rescuers then began searching for the missing victim, who was believed to be stuck in the tunnel of the hydroelectric construction site. Rescue forces in Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam said on Sunday evening that they had found the bodies of two teenagers and a child, who had drowned while bathing at a reservoir in Trang Bom District earlier the same day. The three victims -- 10-year-old Nguyen Van P., 18-year-old Nguyen Thanh P., and 17-year-old Tu Tuong V. -- were residents of Song Thao Commune in Trang Bom District, according to local police. They went to bathe at a reservoir in Thanh Binh Commune in the same district on Sunday afternoon. They slipped and sank in the reservoir, and rescuers arrived and recovered their bodies several hours later. Police in Da Lat, a popular tourist city in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, confirmed on Sunday that they had busted a pickpocket gang that stole from dozens of tourists. The gang includes six members who all hail from southern Dong Nai Province, the Department of Public Security in Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province stated. Officers previously launched an investigation into the case after receiving multiple reports from the victims, who said they lost their phones and wallets while visiting the city. Police then reviewed CCTV footage and went undercover as tourists at famous and crowded destinations to look for suspicious signs.
