Vietnam records zero COVID-19 cases, either local or imported, for 1st time in nearly 2 months

March 21, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

The Ministry of Health reported zero new coronavirus cases, either local or imported, in Vietnam on Sunday, the first time in almost two months.

The country was hit by a new wave of local infections on January 27 after having gone nearly two months without detecting any community-based case.

The health ministry had announced additional transmissions, domestic or imported, every day ever since, including a total of 908 local infections.

The local infections include 724 in Hai Duong Province, 61 in Quang Ninh Province, 36 in Ho Chi Minh City, 35 in Hanoi, 27 in Gia Lai Province, six in Binh Duong Province, five in Bac Ninh Province, four in Hai Phong City, three in Dien Bien Province, two in Hoa Binh Province, two in Hung Yen Province, two in Bac Giang Province, and one in Ha Giang Province.

The ministry documented zero coronavirus cases throughout the nation on Sunday.

An additional 1,446 people were vaccinated against COVID-19 on Saturday, the health ministry said.

A total of 32,361 had been inoculated by 4:00 pm on that day.

They were medical staff directly treating coronavirus patients, health workers doing contact tracing and sampling tasks, and other frontline workers.

AstraZeneca is the only vaccine administered in Vietnam at the moment. The country began mass vaccination on March 8.

The Expanded Program on Immunization, which provides free immunization to children under one year old to protect them from six common and highly fatal infectious diseases in Vietnam, has recorded postvaccinal reactions in those inoculated against COVID-19.

The reactions signified the body’s building immunity against the coronavirus, the program said.

The government has said it already secured 60 million AstraZeneca jabs via direct purchases and the COVAX vaccine-sharing scheme.

Vietnam is negotiating the purchase of vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and the maker of Russia’s Sputnik V, Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said on Wednesday, adding that it may be able to buy 30 million Pfizer-BioNTech doses this year.

Health authorities expect to acquire 150 million vaccine doses in total in 2021.

The nation’s patient tally has hit 2,572 as of Sunday night, with 2,198 recoveries and 35 deaths having been documented so far.

Many schools in Vietnam to resume classroom learning earlier than planned

February 20, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

Several localities in Vietnam have changed their plans to allow students to return to schools after the Lunar New Year holiday about a week earlier than the original schedule.

K-12 and college students in the south-central provinces of Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan and the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap will go to school and take face-to-face lessons from February 22.

On the same date, ninth and 12th grade students in northern Thai Binh Province will also return to school, while students of other grades will continue online study until further notice.

In the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau, the provincial Department of Education and Training on Friday said that offline classrooms will be organized for students who do not have access to online study from February 22.

Resuming in-person schooling way more earlier, all students in northern Nam Dinh Province and students of vocational schools in Dong Thap have come back to school since February 17.

Meanwhile, authorities in northern Bac Ninh Province and southern Binh Phuoc Province on Friday issued a notification requesting students to not return to school through February 28. Before that, these two provinces had planned to keep school closed until Sunday, February 21.

Elsewhere in such big cities as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, students will study online until the end of this month.

Before the Lunar New Year holiday, which started around the end of January for most of students across Vietnam, students were slated to stay home until at least the end of this month or further notice from educational authorities to help curb the new coronavirus wave that has hit 13 Vietnamese localities since January 27.

Schools have to ensure COVID-19 prevention and control measures after their resumption.

Facing different school-reopening schedules in localities, the Ministry of Education and Training has planned to build corresponding timetables for the current 2020-21 school year based on the experience from the previous school year, according to director of the ministry’s secondary education department Nguyen Xuan Thanh.

“If the outbreak lingers until March and all students still cannot return to school, the department will delay the end of the school year,” said Thanh.

“The schedule for the [2021] national high school graduation exam and the entrance exams at other levels will also have to be adjusted, with the former may be held in separate times as in 2020, if any localities are still unable to suppress the virus outbreak,” he added.

Schooling in Vietnam has experienced interruptions between offline and online modes since January last year when COVID-19 first hit the country.

The latest wave of infections since January 27 has seen a total of 770 locally-transmitted cases logged in 13 provinces and cities.

Among them, 590 patients have been reported in Hai Duong Province, 60 in Quang Ninh Province, 27 in Gia Lai Province, 35 in Hanoi, five in Bac Ninh Province, two in Bac Giang Province, 36 in Ho Chi Minh City, two in Hoa Binh Province, one in Ha Giang Province, three in Dien Bien Province, six in Binh Duong Province, one in Hai Phong, and two in Hung Yen Province.

The national tally stood at 2,362 COVID-19 cases as of Saturday morning, with 1,627 recoveries and 35 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health’s data.

7 dead as timber truck crashes into mountainside in north-central Vietnam

March 23, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

Seven people on a truck carrying timber were killed after the vehicle crashed into the mountainside in the north-central Vietnamese province of Thanh Hoa on Monday night.

The deadly crash took place along provincial highway No. 530 in Tri Nang Commune, Lang Chanh District, at around 9:15 pm, Nguyen Xuan Hong, chairman of the Lang Chanh People’s Committee, confirmed on Tuesday morning.

The truck carrying acacia wood was descending a slope when it slammed into the mountainside.

All seven people on the vehicle, including the driver, his assistant, and five timber porters, were killed.

Police officers arrived at the crash site to carry out their investigation and identify the victims.

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh, head of the National Committee for Traffic Safety, and Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The have extended their condolences to the victim’s families.

Khuat Viet Hung, deputy head of the National Committee for Traffic Safety, and officials from the Minister of Transport and Ministry of Public Security arrived in Thanh Hoa to assist local authorities in dealing with the serious case.

Data showed that the truck was traveling within the speed limit prior to the accident, VnExpress online newspaper quoted the Ministry of Public Security as saying.

In their preliminary assessment, competent authorities believed that the truck was overloaded, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Number of people vaccinated against COVID-19 rises past 46,000 in Vietnam

March 30, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

More than 46,000 people have been inoculated against COVID-19 in Vietnam after over 1,200 were administered the first shot of AstraZeneca vaccine on Monday.

The Southeast Asian country’s Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), tasked with coordinating the national mass inoculation, said a total of 1,276 people were immunized on Monday in Hai Duong Province, Hai Phong City, Hoa Binh Province, Bac Giang Province, Ha Giang Province, Dien Bien Province, and Ho Chi Minh City.

A combined 46,416 people have been given the first jab of AstraZeneca vaccine since Vietnam started vaccination on March 8, according to the program’s statistics.

Those vaccinated were medical staff and other frontline workers.

Vietnam received the first-ever batch 117,600 AstraZeneca shots on February 24. This is part of 30 million jabs it bought from AstraZeneca.

The UNICEF said on March 24 that the country would be provided with 811,200 doses of the same vaccine in the next three weeks.

The COVAX scheme, a facility co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi, the World Health Organization (WHO), and UNICEF, to accelerate the development and manufacture of COVID-19 vaccines as well as ensure fair and equitable access for every country, will supply this batch for free.

“This quantity is smaller than previously announced for the first shipment and based on an equitable pro-rata distribution of available doses between all participant countries,” the UNICEF said in a statement.

“Based on initial information shared by the manufacturer, the aim remains to deliver a total of 4,176,000 doses to Vietnam by the end of May, pending operational and supply constraints.”

Vietnam has approved two vaccines, AstraZeneca developed by the eponymous Anglo–Swedish company and Oxford University and Russia’s Sputnik V, for emergency use.

The Vietnamese government has said it already secured 60 million AstraZeneca jabs via direct purchases and the COVAX scheme.

Vietnam expects to acquire 150 million vaccine doses from various producers this year.

It reported zero coronavirus infections on Tuesday morning, when the national caseload stood at 2,594 patients, including 1,603 domestically-transmitted cases, according to the Ministry of Health.

Authorities have recorded 910 domestic cases since January 27.

It has logged 2,308 recoveries and 35 virus-related fatalities so far.

Floating restaurant requested to relocate away from Ho Chi Minh City’s Bach Dang Wharf

April 7, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

A floating restaurant has been asked to relocate away from Bach Dang Wharf in downtown Ho Chi Minh City as local authorities implement a project on renovating Bach Dang Wharf Park.

Hao Huy Company will have to coordinate with operators of Bach Dang Wharf’s berth No. 4 to relocate the Elisa floating restaurant, according to a request from the municipal People’s Committee.

No compensation will be paid to the company for the relocation.

Elisa has been offering its services at Bach Dang Wharf every Friday-Sunday, as well as during holidays.

The city’s administration previously allowed floating restaurants to operate at Bach Dang Wharf until December 31, 2022.

However, these restaurants would have to relocate without compensation when local authorities implement a project on renovating Bach Dang Wharf Park.

In late March, vice-chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Le Hoa Binh requested the Department of Construction to expedite the implementation of the project.

Accordingly, the implementation is divided into three phases, with the first expected to be complete before April 30.

The second phase will wrap up before September 2, and the third will be finished prior to December 23.

The renovation of Bach Dang Wharf Park is estimated to cost VND26 billion (US$1.1 million).

The new park will cover more than 8,000 square meters, consisting of walkways, gardens, green areas, lighting systems, and automatic watering systems.

Several works will be relocated while others will be renovated.

Berths No. 2, 3, and 4 of Bach Dang Wharf are also listed in the project.

At berth No. 2, GreenlinesDP Technology Company is operating river bus routes from Bach Dang Wharf to Can Gio District in Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau City in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau.

Half of berth No. 3 is being utilized by Saigontourist Holding Company to operate its Saigon floating restaurant, while the remaining half is managed by the city’s waterway traffic police unit.
