HCM City (VNA) - A number of bidding packages under the Green Transport Development Project, to develop a new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor in HCM City, are scheduled to be kick started in the fourth quarter of 2021, according to the HCM City Management Board for Traffic Works Construction and Investment. Invested by the management board, the BRT project has total investment of over 121.2 million USD, lent from the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA), and nearly 423 billion VND (over 18.38 million USD) in reciprocal capital. A high-quality bus route, called BRT No 1, will be built along the Vo Van Kiet - Mai Chi Tho Highway, with technical characteristics and quality of service similar to light BRT systems around the world, fully satisfying all of the requirements of smart traffic. Local passenger bus owners recently complained about unfair competition from foreign buses with registration plates from Laos and Cambodia. During busy days, there were eight to ten foreign buses carrying tourists from HCM City to Lam Dong. According to the local bus owners, the fares are cheaper by half because the foreign buses do not have to pay taxes and fees while the local owners have to pay VND1.7m (USD73) to VND2.3m per month per vehicle in addition to the road maintenance fee and other charges. The traffic police said they had fined three buses from Laos and Cambodia VND4m (USD172) each and ordered them to leave Vietnam as they stay in Vietnam past the allowed time limit. Vehicles from Vietnam and Laos can stay in each other's territories for a maximum of 30 days according to Laos-Vietnam Cross-border Transport Permit. Since the EVFTA took effect, more than 15,000 certificates of origin forms have been issued with a total turnover of US$700 million to 28 EU countries, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that in August alone, Vietnam’s export value to the EU reached US$3.25 billion, up 4.65 percent against July and 4.2 percent against last year.
