No ideal waste treatment technology for Vietnam yet
Vo Tien Dung, vice director of Hanoi-based Halcom Vietnam, said his business has been cooperating with German, Finnish and Japanese companies for the last 23 years, but has yet to find the best technologies to deal with Vietnam’s waste problems. It is difficult to treat typically unsorted and highly humid waste in Vietnam. For example, trash in Europe has a humidity level of around 20%, while trash in Vietnam could have a humidity level of 60-70%, he added. Even the ongoing waste-to-energy plants in Hanoi and Can Tho would need more time so their effectiveness could be evaluated, Dung said. Treating unsorted trash without the same humidity conditions as in other countries would make it hard to meet efficiency and emission standards, he added. Nguyen Quang Huan, member of the National Assembly’s Committee for Science, Technology and the Environment, said he was concerned about waste-to-energy plants. More helicopter rides proposed after Con Dao airport closes for upgrade
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam on Monday said Con Dao Airport will be closed from April to December next year for an upgrade expected to increase its capacity from 400,000 to two million passengers a year in 2030. During the airport closure, tourists are still able to reach Con Dao Islands by helicopter from Vung Tau Town. There are currently two return helicopter rides a week every Friday and Sunday operated by the Southern Vietnam helicopter company. At a meeting Tuesday, Trinh Hang, director of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, said Con Dao has been witnessing a surge in tourist numbers in recent years and the airport closure will affect travel demand. He proposed the Ministry of Transport to consider increasing helicopter rides from the mainland to Con Dao and launching commercial flights by helicopter from Ho Chi Minh City. Con Dao Airport was built by the French in the 20th century and upgraded in 2003 for commercial use. At present it is closed at night because it lacks … [Read more...] about More helicopter rides proposed after Con Dao airport closes for upgrade
Cuba brings oil depot fire under control, worst in island’s history
Firefighters on Tuesday finally overcame what officials described as the worst fire in Cuba's history that over five days destroyed 40% of the Caribbean island's main fuel storage facility and caused massive blackouts. Reuters witnesses reported the raging flames that ravaged a four-tank segment of the Matanzas super tanker port had died down and the towering plumes of thick black smoke streaming from the area were diminished and now mostly gray. Matanzas is Cuba's largest port for receiving crude oil and fuel imports. Cuban heavy crude, as well as fuel oil and diesel stored in Matanzas in 10 huge tanks, are mainly used to generate electricity on the island. Lightning struck one fuel storage tank on Friday evening. The fire spread to a second by Sunday and engulfed the four-tank area on Monday, accompanied by huge explosions and despite efforts by local firefighters supported by more than 100 Mexican and Venezuelan reinforcements. A firefighter works on the zone … [Read more...] about Cuba brings oil depot fire under control, worst in island’s history
