U.S. Secretary of State set to visit Vietnam The Saigon Times Daily U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo – PHOTO: REUTERS HCMC – United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will pay his first visit to Vietnam from July 8 to 10, Ngo Toan Thang, deputy spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told a news briefing in Hanoi City today, July 5. His visit, which is at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh, will help boost ties in fields such as politics, foreign affairs, economy, trade, investment, defense and national security. Mike Pompeo was sworn in as Secretary of State of the United States in late April this year. He served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency from January 2017 to April 2018. The visit will come at the invitation of President Tran Dai Quang. Through the decades, Vietnam and Australia have built a strong partnership with the establishment of comprehensive partnership in 2009. They signed a declaration on enhancing bilateral comprehensive partnership in 2015. Trade and economic partnership is an outstanding example in bilateral ties, with trade revenue increasing 200 times since 1990 to reach 6.46 billion USD in 2017 and expected to hit 10 billion USD in 2020.
