The national tally now stands at 1,337,523 transmissions, of which 1,332,216 came in the fourth wave of infections that has swept the country since late April. HCM City had the highest number of new cases at 965, followed by Cần Thơ City with 898 and Tây Ninh at 869. The capital Hà Nội reported 737 new infections. The latest infections, including five imported and 13,835 domestic transmissions, were documented in 59 provinces and cities, the ministry said, adding that 7,306 patients got infected in the community. In a letter sent to all 63 cities and provinces Monday, the ministry stated the pandemic situation has grown more complex in many countries, especially with the appearance of the mutated strain Omicron, or B.1.1.529 Covid variant, first sequenced in South Africa and designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a top Variant of Concern (VOC).
