In pandemic times, HCMC overachieves state budget collection target

March 2, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

The revenue is almost twice the sum it has been assigned for per day this year, municipal vice chairman Vo Van Hoan said at an online meeting Tuesday.

He said the government has tasked HCMC with earning VN365 trillion in budget revenues this year, which means it has to earn VND1.5 trillion each day.

As of now, the city has collected VND74.5 trillion, up 10.5 percent against the same period last year.

“Given what has been happening, the city will be able to complete the mission assigned by the central government,” Hoan said.

HCMC earned budget revenues of VND410 trillion in 2019, roughly 27 percent of the national figure and 3.3 percent higher than the target.

Last year, due to the pandemic impact, it achieved just 91.5 percent of the target, earning VND371 trillion.

HCMC’s population makes up 9.5 percent of the nation’s 96 million, its labor force accounts for 8.2 percent of the nation’s, but for several years now, it has repeatedly been the biggest money maker, contributing 25-27 percent of the state’s annual budget collection on average.

According to the city administration, in the first two months alone, all socio-economic development indicators in the city had posted better growth over the same period the previous year.

The total sales value of goods and services increased 4.7 percent while export turnover reached $8 billion, three times higher than the same period last year. The city’s industrial production index rose by 6 percent and more than 3,800 companies resumed operations in the first two months.

However, the city’s service industry is still suffering heavily from the pandemic and in the two months, the tourism sector saw revenues drop 70 percent year-on-year, while the hotel sector recorded a decrease of 14 percent.

Vietnam closed its borders and suspended all international flights in March 2020 to curb infection spread and has remained in that state ever since.

HCMC was granted autonomous decision-making powers in September 2017 to help it develop to its full potential. Accordingly, the city can raise and add additional fees and charges to increase its budget revenue.

Its top officials had in 2019 and 2020 asked the central government to let the city keep more of what it earns to pay for infrastructure development, because it has only been allowed to use 18 percent of its own budget collection so far.

Most major projects in HCMC, the biggest in Vietnam, are put under direct management of the ministries and the city cannot execute them as it has neither the financial ability nor the authority to do so.

Thailand’s Udon Thani Province wishes to take lead in cooperation with Vietnam

March 2, 2021 by en.nhandan.org.vn

The Udon Thani official made the remark during a working session with Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand Phan Chi Thanh on the occasion of the latter’s working visit to the province from February 23 to 28.

Sayam Sirimongkorn spoke highly of the Vietnamese community in Thailand as a whole and in Udon Thani in particular, who, he said, have always showed a great sense of solidarity, complied with the law and made significant contributions to the locality.

Ambassador Phan Chi Thanh thanked the provincial authorities for offering valuable support to the Vietnamese community, voicing his hopes that the Udon Thani leaders will continue to create favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community and help them in terms of policies and law, as well as supporting the work of local Vietnamese associations.

Highlighting the province’s advantages for boosting cooperation with Vietnam, the ambassador suggested the two sides strengthen the discussion of cooperation opportunities, including coordinating on the organisation of the Vietnam-Thailand Business Forum in Udon Thani in Q2 2021, on the occasion of the 45 th anniversary of Vietnam-Thailand diplomatic ties.

During a meeting with Vichian Khaokham, chair of the Udon Thani provincial administration organisation, Thanh shared the socio-economic development experiences of Vietnamese localities with similar conditions to Udon Thani, agreeing that the two sides need to soon prepare for the exchange of delegations and the signing of cooperation documents immediately after the air route between the two countries is reopened.

The Udon Thani leaders agreed to create favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community to further develop their business & investment activities in the locality, towards establishing Vietnamese business and culinary streets in Udon Thani when conditions allow.

The delegation from the Vietnamese Embassy also paid a working visit to the Udon Thani Rajabhat University, during which the university’s rector, Charoon Thawornchak, highly lauded its educational cooperation with partner universities in the Vietnamese provinces of Thai Nguyen, Dien Bien and Quang Ninh. He expressed his wish for enhanced cooperation between Udon Thani and Vietnam in the time ahead, especially in the areas of education and people-to-people exchange.

For his part, Ambassador Phan Chi Thanh emphasised the educational cooperation potential between Thai universities and their Vietnamese partners, suggesting the two sides proactively facilitate such connections.

During the trip, Ambassador Phan Chi Thanh and Luong Xuan Hoa, president of the association of Vietnamese people in Udon Thani, met with young overseas Vietnamese in Thailand. Thanh briefed them on the situation in Vietnam as well as the success of the 13 th National Party Congress with its adoption of a socio-economic development strategy to turn Vietnam into a developed country by 2045.

Young overseas Vietnamese were encouraged to uphold their sense of solidarity and mutual support, and serve as a long-term friendship bridge between the two countries.

Vietnamese boxer gears up for world title shot

Vietnamese boxer gears up for world title shot hinh anh 1 Nguyen Thi Thu Nhi trains at the Cocky Buffalo club in HCM City to prepare for her WBO title fight in April (Photo courtesy of Cocky Buffalo)

Hanoi (VNS/VNA) – Nguyen Thi Thu Nhi will have to wait till April for her chance to become the first Vietnamese world female boxing champion after her fight was delayed.

Instead of being dismayed, the pint-sized boxer has taken the delay as an opportunity to sharpen her technique to prepare for her date with destiny.

The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) agreed to move the mini flyweight (48kg) title defence between Thu and Japanese boxer Etsuko Tada to April, about two months after it was scheduled to be held.

The delay was needed as Tada could not travel to Vietnam in February due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the second time that the bout was postponed after being originally scheduled for last April in the Republic of Korea.

“It is sad that it was delayed again while I am in good mood and preparing well for it,” Nhi told Vietnam News.

“However, thinking again I told myself that I would have more time to sharpen my skills and improve my tactics. It may help to increase my chances of winning,” she said.

Nhi is Vietnam’s first WBO Asia Pacific Boxing champion after taking the title last February in Cambodia. She won on points after defeating Kanyarat Yoohanngoh of Thailand in a 10-round fight.

The 25-year-old lacks international experience in contrast to seasoned pro Tada who has fought for more than a decade and grabbed a number of titles.

“The Japanese fighter is really strong and a senior in this field compared to me,” Nhi said about her 39-year-old opponent. “But I also have my strong points. I am younger and confident. It is okay if I unfortunately lose in a match that I do my best. Then I will fight again in another match until I can win.”

“My coaches said my technique is fairly good so they asked me to spend more time on my physique because Japanese athletes have strong physique. Tada is 39 but she could knock out her rival in the ninth round.”

Nhi is training at the Cocky Buffalo Boxing Gym in HCM City under Republic of Korean coach Kim Sang Bum.

Kim, in contrast to the style of the bombastic American, was guarded when asked about the title fight.

“The postponement is someway not good for Nhi because she was preparing to get to her best in February. Now with the sudden delay, she will have to adjust for the change including her spirit. The more she believes the better result she would get,” Kim said.

“Her opponent, who is stronger and more experienced, will also have more time for the fight. She is also confident and can fight any time. I told my athlete to keep training and be comfortable but focused.”

Kim said Nhi cannot compare to Tada in some aspects but the Vietnamese fighter is very agile and has a good mind for boxing.

“The chance to win for Nhi is about 70 per cent. I think if she follows our tactics plus her confidence, winning is possible,” said Kim.

Southpaw Tada beat ex-WBA titleholder Ayaka Miyao to take the vacant WBO title last December.

Previously, she held this WBO belt in 2018, held the WBA title from 2009 to 2013 and the IBF crown from 2015 to 2017.

While Tada has recorded 26 matches with 20 wins (seven KOs), three draws and three losses, Nhi has fought four matches with four wins. A milestone in her career was a victory over three-time world champion Filipino Gretchen Abaniel at the Victory 8 Championship in 2018 in HCM City.

“My biggest push for this match is to be the first Vietnamese boxer to vie for a world title. If I win, I will make history for Vietnam,” said An Giang province-born Nhi./.

Nigerian man sentenced to death in Vietnam for drug trafficking

March 2, 2021 by vov.vn

Ekwegbalu James Nzube, 45, was caught red handed by border guards at 08.00pm on July 20, 2020 while illegally crossing the border from Cambodia into Vietnam.

Searching his rucksack, the border guards found James Nzube was carrying 4 plastic bags containing white solid crystal substance, weighing more than 3.9kg, which was then identified as methamphetamine.

James Nzube admitted that he got acquainted with a man of Nigerian nationality named Jone in Guangdong (China) in 2014 when he traded in clothing in China. Johe transferred money and goods from China to Nigeria, and he often came to Nzube’s to carry out transactions.

Jone asked James Nzube to transport drugs from Cambodia to Vietnam in exchange for money, and the proposal was accepted.

On March 13, 2020 James Nzube entered Vietnam via Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, and then rented a room at Hoa Hong Hotel to stay. Jone later hired James Nzube to go to Cambodia and transport drugs to Vietnam for US$2,000.

He was then caught red handed transporting drugs from Cambodia to Vietnam by Vietnamese border guards stationed at Moc Bai International Border Gate.
