Bangkok (VNA) – State-run Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) expects to operate a 45-megawatt floating solar farm it claims to be the largest in the world this June. Egat signed a contract with B.Grimm Power Plc, which will serve as an engineering, procurement and construction firm to develop photovoltaic panels worth 842 million baht (28 million USD) on Sirindhorn Dam in Ubon Ratchathani, where an Egat hydropower plant is operating. The floating solar farm is designed to be a hybrid system, working in tandem with 36MW of hydropower generation to increase optimisation capacity. The facility, which generates power on a water surface of 72 hectares, was originally scheduled for operation in December last year, but the launch was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thailand to spend 814 million USD on R&D in 2022
Hanoi (VNA) - The Thai Government will earmark a combined 24.4 billion baht (814 million USD) for spending on research and development (R&D) in the fiscal year 2022, up from 19.9 billion baht in fiscal 2021. According to Kitipong Promwong, director of the Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO), the proposed budget received the green light from the cabinet last week Kitipong said the spending would also focus largely on creating innovation for commercial purposes, strengthening competitiveness in the production and service sectors, narrowing income disparity and upgrading technology. According to Kitipong, Thailand faces many challenges in terms of social problems, poverty, income disparity and economic competitiveness, so its government sees it as imperative for R&D to help tackle such problems. Humanitarian Lunar New Year fair for the poor in Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh (VNA) – The Red Cross Society of northern Ninh Binh province held a humanitarian Lunar New Year fair in support of the poor and the disabled in Yen Thanh, Yen Dong and Yen Thai – the poorest communes of Yen Mo district, on January 25. Joining the event, 180 poor households and those living with disabilities had a chance to receive vouchers worth 500,000 VND (21.7 USD), which could be used once to buy necessities for free at stalls. Chairman of the provincial Red Cross Society Bui Trong Ky said the event is a joint effort among the provincial Red Cross Society, businesses and philanthropists with an aim to ease difficulties faced by the poor. Vientiane (VNA) – The completion and early signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is very important to the process of economic recovery in the region, said a member of the Lao negotiation team to the RCEP talks. RCEP is a free trade agreement in the Indo-Pacific region between the 10 member states of the ASEAN and its five FTA partners (Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, and the Republic of Korea).
