Bangkok (NNT/VNA) - The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) expects continued volatility in capital markets due to the trade dispute between the United States and China, but foreign investor confidence in Thailand remains strong due to the country’s robust economic foundations and profit growth among listed companies. SET President Dr. Pakorn Peetathawatchai revealed that last year, the SET index shrank 10.8 percent from the year before, due to global disruptions from the ongoing trade tension between the United States and China. However, he added that Thailand’s economic foundations remain strong and continued to post higher growth last year, with several publicly listed companies reporting higher profits. The high production costs, taxes and fees all make automobile prices in Vietnam much higher than in other countries in the region. At the government’s November regular press conference, the local press raised questions about the tax and fee policies, saying that automobile manufacturers complain about current policies put difficulties for them to compete with imports and increase the localization ratio. Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said the car prices in Vietnam are higher than inother countries because the domestic production cost is higher. The high taxes and fees also push the prices up. VinFast, a 100 percent Vietnamese owned automobile manufacturer, days ago announced the automobile price structure. According to the London-based NGO Save The Children, the report it released this week ranks countries based on eight factors - malnutrition, child labor, being out of school, teen pregnancy, homicide, being displaced by conflict, child marriage, and death before age five. Vietnam scored 831 out of 1,000, up from 816 last year. The report said Vietnam and three other countries, Bangladesh, Brazil and Ethiopia, have used additional resources from social investment and economic growth to create highly effective programs benefitting children. It also pointed out that a significant reduction in stunting has helped Vietnam gain 67 points since 2000 when it only had 764. Vietnam has also cut the child labor rate by two thirds since 2000 to 9 percent. Its progress in tackling poverty has improved living conditions for many families and reduced their need to send children to work.
