Hanoi Amateur Water Puppetry Festival to take place in May

Hanoi (VNA) – The Hanoi Amateur Water Puppetry Festival 2021 will be held on May 17 in Hanoi, aiming at promoting and preserving Vietnam’s unique intangible heritage .

The festival will be held on May 17 at Thay Pagoda relic site, Sai Son commune, Quoc Oai district, Hanoi.

Masters, non-professional members of traditional water puppetry troupes from all around Hanoi will join in a single water puppet show, which last for at least 25 minutes.

Each performance will re-enact glorious historical events of the nation; present the daily life and work of Vietnamese people; and promote the cultural value of Vietnam.

Water puppetry originated in the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam around the 10th century, where almost all towns and villages have communal ponds, which were used as the puppet show stage.

The villages of Thach That and Dao Thuc in Hanoi and Rach and Nguyen Xa in the nearby provinces of Nam Dinh and Thai Binh are some of the earliest known centres of water puppetry .

Traditionally, water puppetry performances portray the daily life of Vietnamese farmers (cultivating, tending buffalo, and catching fish), communal entertainment (swimming races and dragon dancing), or historical legends (like Le Loi returning the precious sword to the Golden Turtle in Hoan Kiem Lake) appealing to audiences for centuries./.

Three killed in production workshop fire in Bac Ninh

Upon receiving news of the disaster, the Bac Ninh Police Department and relevant units immediately sent fire trucks and firefighters to the scene of the incident.

Despite their swift response, rescue work encountered numerous difficulties when approaching the scene as the blaze grew on the second floor.

After one hour of battling the spread of the flames, firefighters were able to successfully extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to the surrounding area.

The three victims were workers of Dreamtech Vietnam who hail from Bac Ninh, Tuyen Quang, and Thai Binh provinces. They were in the process of checking the company’s production workshop along with other workers when the fire initially broke out.

Police in Bac Ninh province said on April 17 that competent forces had urgently launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and are now calculating the damage.

Three workers killed in factory fire in northern Vietnam

A furious fire killed three workers on the spot at a factory in the northern Vietnamese province of Bac Ninh on Friday night.

The blaze broke out and spread over an area of nearly 1,000 square meters at the second floor of the factory of Dreamtech Vietnam Co., Ltd at the VSIP Industrial Park in Tien Du District at around 11:00 pm on the same night.

Firefighters immediately arrived at the site upon the report of the case but found it difficult to access to the affected area. They needed about one hour to put the fire under control.

Three workers — 28-year-old D.T.T.H. from the same province, 32-year-old M.V.K. from Tuyen Quang Province and 31-year-old N.V.T. from Thai Binh Province — were found dead at the scene.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident and calculating damages.

Eight more imported Covid-19 patients confirmed on Saturday evening

Eight Vietnamese people who recently returned from abroad have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, raising the total number of patients in the country to 2,781, the Ministry of Health reported on Saturday evening.

According to the ministry’s report, the newly-reported patients include five men and three women aged between 24-38 who returned from Japan, Romania, Russia, and Cambodia. They were sent to quarantine areas in Danang City and Khanh Hoa and Kien Giang provinces upon arrival and are now being treated at local hospitals and healthcare centres.

With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 2,781, including 910 locally-transmitted cases reported since the new outbreak started in Hai Duong on January 28.

As of 6 pm on April 16, a total of 2,475 Covid-19 patients had recovered and been discharged from hospital. There have been 35 deaths, most of them being the elderly with serious underlying diseases.

At present, over 40,000 people who had close contact with Covid-19 patients or returned from virus-hit areas are being monitored at hospitals, quarantine facilities, and at home.
