Kitchen building material could cut urban flooding by half: scientists
Sidewalks made from travertine - a form of limestone used for tiles and kitchen bench tops - can cut flooding by up to 50 percent, according to a study by researchers at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, southeast China. As well as helping water escape into the ground, travertine removes a number of pollutants that occur when rainwater mixes with dirt, rendering it suitable for agriculture, they said. “We have more evidence to show that flooding is happening more often all over the world due to climate change,” said Xiaonan Tang, a co-author of the study and associate professor at the university’s department of civil engineering. “This new material helps reduce urban surface flow to reduce flooding,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation on Tuesday. Over the past four decades, natural disasters have cost the Asia-Pacific region about $1.3 trillion, according to U.N. estimates, with China, Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam worst-hit by … [Read more...] about Kitchen building material could cut urban flooding by half: scientists
India provides inclusive drinking water service to about 1.65 million…
“High arsenic and fluoride levels in drinking water are a threat to public health in India, where West Bengal is by far the worst affected state,” said ADB Principal Urban Development Specialist Ms. Neeta Pokhrel. “Through efficient use of surface water and a shift to piped water schemes, the ADB project will reduce the burden of disease from arsenic and fluoride while preserving groundwater and enhancing climate resilience.”With about 85% of water in India’s rural areas coming from groundwater, some 27 million people are at risk from arsenic and fluoride contamination. Arsenic in drinking water can lead to a range of problems including cancer, while high exposure to fluoride can cause dental or skeletal fluorosis and bone diseases. The project will provide safe, sustainable, and inclusive drinking water service to about 1.65 million people in three districts of West Bengal state, India, at risk from arsenic, fluoride, and salinity. HCMC plans to develop underground anti-flood reservoirs
HCMC plans to develop underground anti-flood reservoirsThe Saigon Times Daily HCMC – The HCMC government is mapping out a plan to build underground reservoirs, using advanced technologies to provide relief from floods in the city caused by heavy rains and high tides, Lao Dong newspaper reports. The municipal government has asked the HCMC Steering Center of the Urban Flood Control Program and the authority of Thu Duc District to evaluate the effectiveness of such a reservoir using Japanese Cross-Wave technology. Cross-Wave is a water holding material for rainfall accumulation installed within underground reservoirs. The material has mechanical durability, is easily installed and uninstalled, and is favorable for construction. The 13m x 14m reservoir was built by Sekisui Vietnam Pipe Solutions Co Ltd and VMC Tech Vietnam, and supervised by the HCMC People’s Committee and the HCMC Steering Center of the Urban Flood Control Program. The technology can be applied to small … [Read more...] about HCMC plans to develop underground anti-flood reservoirs
Flood damage would double without coral reefs: study
Loss of coral reefs around the world would double the damage from coastal flooding, and triple the destruction caused by storm surges, researchers said Tuesday. Coupled with projected sea level rise driven by global warming, reef decline could see flooding increase four-fold by century's end, they reported in the journal Nature Communications. Without coral to help absorb the shock, a once-in-a-century cyclone would wreak twice the havoc, with the damage measured in the tens of billions of dollars, the team calculated. "Coral reefs serve as natural, submerged breakwaters that reduce flooding by breaking waves and reducing wave energy," said Michael Beck, lead scientist at The Nature Conservancy research and environmental group, and a professor at the University of California in Santa Cruz. "Unfortunately, we are already losing the height and complexity of shallow reefs around the world, so we are likely already seeing increases in flood damages along many tropical coasts," he told AFP. … [Read more...] about Flood damage would double without coral reefs: study
