Many school physical abuse cases never brought to light
Instead of suing the culprits, denouncing abusers to agencies, or seeking support from the community, victims of school physical abuse tend to conceal the cases and keep everything secret. Many student abuse cases have been reported in recent months. However, experts believe that the reported cases are just the ‘tip of the iceberg’, while many other cases have never been brought to light, and the abusers have not been punished. Women in Tokyo strongly back single sex transport amid security fears
Women in Tokyo are most in favour of having single-sex carriages on public transport, according to a poll in five of the world's biggest commuter cities released on Thursday, despite such policies face growing criticism. A Thomson Reuters Foundation survey of 1,000 female travellers in Tokyo, London, New York City, Cairo and Mexico City found less than half were in favour of women-only sections on trains and buses to boost safety. But nearly 70 percent of women in Tokyo backed single sex carriages that were introduced into the city in 2000 to combat a phenomenon commonly known as "chikan", or groping, on trains. More than half of women in the Japanese capital said safety was their top transport concern but seven in 10 were confident they could now travel without sexual harassment or violence. Women in Cairo and Mexico City also said safety was their biggest concern about using public and private transport and 60 percent and 55 percent respectively said women-only sections on trains and … [Read more...] about Women in Tokyo strongly back single sex transport amid security fears
Where football is king, other athletes are part of the great unwashed
Tran Minh When I was still a journalist and worked for sports magazines, I would pitch profile stories of athletes who were talented and also good-looking. But they would invariably be rejected. The reason? "No one would know who they are." Thus, non-footballers, dreaming of standing on the podium, continue to shed sweat and tears in their training rooms and in the arena, but it remains sweat and tears "no one would know" about. Last Sunday might have been the most memorable day in the life of Vuong Thi Huyen, 27, when she won Vietnam's first gold medal at the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines. She lifted 77 kg in the snatch and 95 kg in the clean and jerk to defeat Indonesia’s formidable Lisa Setiawatia in the 45 kg category. To get that far, Huyen had to overcome the pain of losing her father just a couple of weeks before she left for the games and the anxiety caused by the injury she picked up in April at the 2019 Asian Weightlifting Championships. In all fairness, it should … [Read more...] about Where football is king, other athletes are part of the great unwashed
