The athletes parade kick-started the festivities, as competitors from the various nations took centre-stage. A drone show then turned the inky black sky into a stunning screen showcasing the different sports contested at the Games. The captivating showcase then culminated in the display of the Games theme: We Win As One. The dreams of millions of Vietnamese football fans came true after decades of hurt and false dawns, as the men's team won their first ever gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – After more than 10 days of competition, the Vietnamese delegation wrapped up the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 30) in the Philippines with 98 gold medals and the second position, surpassing by far the initial targets of from 65-70 gold medals and the third position. This is the first time since the SEA Games 2009 Vietnam secured the second position. It is no exaggeration to say that this is one of the most successful SEA Games for Vietnam as athletes showed impressive progress in key events and even broke SEA Games records by far, including the cases of swimmers Huy Hoang and Hung Nguyen, and runner Nguyen Thi Oanh. The PM said the men's team had inspired national development. Speaking at the meeting, head coach Park Hang-seo said he and his team were under huge pressure going into the tournament because they had never won gold before, while the women’s team had five titles under their belts. Vietnam’s ‘Little Mermaid’ named best woman athlete at SEA Games
Vien, nicknamed "Little Mermaid," received a trophy at the closing ceremony of the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines on Wednesday. The 23-year-old from the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho shared the spotlight with fellow swimmer, Singapore's Quah Zheng Wen, who was named the best male athlete with exactly the same medal tally as Vien. In the two previous games, Vien, a captain in the army, had won eight gold medals each. She had set her sights on a similar tally this year but narrowly missed it, winning silver medals in 50 m backstroke and 800 m freestyle. Vietnam won a total of 288 medals this time, including 98 golds, to finish second behind host the Philippines in the medals tally.
