HCMC takes belated steps to sort out skyscraper mess

May 16, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

Experts say such tight restrictions should have been imposed long ago to avoid the current mess and chaos on many roads. Cars and motorbikes crowded Pho Quang Street in Tan Binh District on Tuesday morning last week, dragging themselves sluggishly towards the downtown area. The road, an entrance to the Tan Son Nhat Airport, is just two kilometers long and only eight meters wide. Yet there are 15 skyscrapers lining it, with tens of thousands of apartments, hotels and offices. The largest project on the street is an apartment complex with four blocks and 16 floors, hosting around 500 apartments. It has been open for about five years. There are other complexes with 8-10 floors and a hospital, so the street is always crowded. It gets hellish during rush hours. Pho Quang isn’t the only street plagued by quickly rising skyscrapers and infrastructures that can’t keep up with them. Nguyen Huu Tho, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Mai Chi Tho are a few more examples. HCMC … [Read more...] about HCMC takes belated steps to sort out skyscraper mess

The project, approved more than 10 years ago, is estimated to cost around VNĐ100 trillion (US$4.4 billion). It will be 197.6km long with four lanes in the first phase. In the second phase, the road could be widened to six or eight lanes. Thousands in US march under ‘Ban Off Our Bodies’ banner for abortion rights

May 15, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

The protests kicked off what organizers predict will be a "summer of rage" ignited by the May 2 disclosure of a draft opinion showing the court's conservative majority ready to reverse the 1973 ruling that established a woman's constitutional right to terminate her pregnancy. The court's final ruling, which could return the power to ban abortion to state legislatures, is expected in June. About half of the 50 states are poised to ban or severely restrict abortion almost immediately should Roe be struck down. "If you can't choose whether you want to have a baby, if that's not a fundamental right, then I don't know what is," said Brita Van Rossum, 62, a landscape designer who traveled from suburban Philadelphia to join the abortion-rights rally in the nation's capital, her first ever. Protesters marching under the slogan "Bans Off Our Bodies" took to the streets from New York and Atlanta to Chicago and Los Angeles in a show of outrage that Democrats hope will help galvanize support … [Read more...] about Thousands in US march under ‘Ban Off Our Bodies’ banner for abortion rights

HCMC residents trash, dirty Thu Thiem urban area

May 14, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

The Thu Thiem New Urban Area on the other side of the Saigon River which faces downtown District 1, spans 930 ha and is home to around 200,000 people. It is expected to be developed into the most modern area in Southeast Asia, but several issues have hampered implementation of this plan. Many projects still remain on paper. Land plots near the Saigon River, where planned projects have yet to begin construction, have become places for people to hang out during the weekends. Last Saturday, hundreds upon hundreds of people gathered near streets like To Huu, Tran Bach Dang or R12, parking their vehicles on streets and pavements. Stalls have placed tables and chairs along the pavements, and the trash generated is dumped into the environment, with both customers and vendors not bothered about dirtying the area and making it ugly. Tien, a guard, said that ever since the Thu Thiem 2 Bridge opened, nearby roads are packed with … [Read more...] about HCMC residents trash, dirty Thu Thiem urban area
