The water ran over Nguyen Thi Anh's hands as her granddaughter poured slowly from a plastic bottle. The 57-year-old woman used the water to rinse the dishes after cleaning them with tap water. In the last few days she has been unable to use tap water for much. Last night she had stayed up until midnight with her children to collect water from a tanker truck dispatched by local authorities. "I was sleeping when the security guy knocked on the door and told us the water tanker was coming. We immediately went downstairs to get some water. I was so tired and could not wake up early this morning." But the good thing was that the family had enough fresh water, she added. 250,000 Hanoi families get tap water again, safety announcement pending
One of the five distributors that get their water from Viwasupco also said that an announcement of the water quality would have to come from authorities later. "We have re-supplied water normally. Whether the water is safe enough or not, Hanoi's Department of Health and scientists will make an announcement," said director Nguyen Huu Toi of the Viwaco Joint Stock Company (Viwaco). The water supply was cut on Tuesday as Viwasupco said it needed to clean its pipes and reservoirs following findings of oil contamination. Water has been resupplied to its over 147,000 customers in the southwestern part of the capital, including the districts of Thanh Xuan, Nam Tu Liem and Cau Giay. Hanoi water supplier’s soaring profits
Vinaconex Water Supply Jsc (Viwasupco) reported revenues of almost VND264 billion ($11.43 million) and a gross profit of VND151 billion ($6.51 million) in the first half of this year, a 57 percent gross profit margin. It has seen steady growth since 2012 with demand for water rising as the Hanoi population surges with urbanization. Over the next six years its pretax profits almost quadrupled. Revenues from supplying tap water last year were worth VND469 billion ($20.31 million), while pretax profits were over VND230 billion ($9.96 million). With an equity of almost VND1 trillion ($43.31 million), the company has a return on equity ratio of 24 percent, among the highest of any listed company. Germany looks to draw human resources from Vietnam

The Vietnam News Agency’s correspondent in Berlin quoted German Minister for Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier as saying on December 13 that the shortage of skilled workers is one of the biggest challenges for Germany to stand firm in the context of global competition. To address this issue, Germany will have to attract human resources from countries outside the European Union (EU) to meet its labour demand.
