Singapore designates special area for US-DPRK summit

(Source: REUTERS/Edgar Su) Singapore (VNA) – The Singaporean government announced on June 4 that it has designated a central region of the city state as a "special event area" from June 10-14 for a planned summit between US President Donald Trump and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)’s leader Kim Jong Un. The area comprises the districts of Tanglin, Newton and Orchard, where the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US Embassy, and several large hotels are located, including the Shangri-La hotel, which was mentioned as a possible venue for the summit. To date, there has been no confirmation of the venue for the summit to discuss ending the DPRK’s nuclear weapons programme in return for diplomatic and economic incentives, although several Singaporean hotels have figured as candidates. Vietnam, China negotiate cooperation in less sensitive marine areas
During the 10th round in China in 2017 In a straightforward and friendly manner, the two sides reviewed and expressed their delight at cooperation outcomes since the 10th round last year. Their review covered a number of projects on studying and comparing Holocene sediments of the Red River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta; exchanging information about and studying the management of the sea and island environment in the Gulf of Tonkin; and releasing fry and protecting aquatic resources in the Gulf of Tonkin. They agreed to continue the implementation of these projects and compared notes on new projects proposed by the Chinese side. Washington announced steep steel and aluminium tariffs in March 2018 on countries, including China. (AFP Photo) The temperature is rising between the United States and China but the simmering confrontation has not yet boiled over into a trade war, since the tit-for-tat countermeasures so far have been confined to a few specific products. Beijing on Monday (Apr 2) imposed tariffs on 128 American goods, retaliating for President Donald Trump's decision last month to slap import duties of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium. Washington was primarily targeting China which has long been accused of flooding the global market with the metals, but the tariffs hit US allies as well, prompting Trump to exempt several countries, including major producers Mexico and Canada.
