Foreign arrivals decline by 99.1% over two months

March 2, 2021 by vov.vn

The number of foreign arrivals reached 11,000 in February alone, down by 38.3% from January’s figures.

The GSO attributed the sharp fall to the serious impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially the resurgence of the virus in January, on the tourism industry.

The majority of foreign arrivals in the reviewed period were experts, technical workers, and drivers who transported goods on roads through border gates, according to the GSO.

In a recent report produced by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), this year is likely to prove extremely challenging for the local tourism industry. Vietnam has yet to reopen its borders to international tourists due to COVID-19, therefore the number of foreign arrivals will remain low in the coming months.

Though Vietnam represents one of the bright spots for effectively controlling the spread of COVID-19, the local tourism industry has been greatly impacted by the pandemic.

Relic sites, sightseeing spots, and entertainment areas nationwide have been forced to shut down several times, with many travel agencies finding it difficult to do business amid COVID-19 fears.

The VNAT has recently carried out domestic travel stimulus schemes aimed at boosting online tourism advertisement through social networks, including YouTube, with the aim of helping the local tourism industry to recover in the post-COVID-19 period.

$23,000 salary sought for foreign experts training HCMC metro engineers

March 2, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

In a proposal submitted to the city, the metro operator, the HCMC Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR), said it has agreed with the metro consultancy, NJPT, a consortium led by Japan’s Nippon Koei, that the chief expert would be paid 2.5 million yen a month and the rest 2.35 million yen.

It said these are the lowest salaries for the jobs as set in the contract.

They are comparable with the salaries agreed for the mass rapid transit project in Jakarta, it said.

Vietnamese experts involved in training engineers will be paid differently, but the details have not been disclosed.

In January a school that was training 58 engineers for the metro announced it had put the course on hold citing non-payment of its fees by MAUR.

The 15-month training, at Hanoi’s Vietnam Railway College in collaboration with NJPT, had begun last July. The trainees, including one woman, are aged 21-35.

It appears that payments to teachers and the school can only be made if appendix No.19 to a 2007 contract between MAUR and NJPT is signed, and that requires the city to approve the engineers’ salaries.

The contract envisaged completion of the line in 2015.

Numerous setbacks that caused delays have pushed the project’s completion to next year.

The long delay also forced the two parties to add 19 appendixes to the contract.

The 19.7-kilometer route from Ben Thanh Market in District 1 to Suoi Tien Theme Park in District 9 will have 17 Japanese-made trains operating.

To cost VND43.7 trillion ($1.89 billion), it has seen 82 percent of the work completed against a targeted 85 percent.

MAUR has blamed the delay on Japanese and European engineers installing the tracks being unable to enter Vietnam last year after international flights were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Foreign food chains threatened with boycott because of phony Vietnamese dishes

March 2, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

The largest Dutch supermarket chain, a restaurant in Canada, and a US fast food brand have been threatened with a boycott because they have provided nonstandard Vietnamese dishes.

Foreign food chains threatened with boycott because of phony Vietnamese dishes

The product labelled as ‘Vietnamese Pho’ at the Dutch chain

Albert Heijin (AH), the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands, had to remove products labelled as ‘Vietnamese Pho’ from its shelves after negative backlash from customers.

A customer said the supermarket provided chicken thighs, while the ingredients of the “authentic” pho are sliced beef or chicken. She wrote a letter to the AH board of directors and expressed her feelings about the “so-called Vietnamese pho”.

Vietnamese pho is a dish famous all over the world and people, if wanting to learn about it, just need to look it up on the internet.

In 2020, Pho King Bon, a well known restaurant in Montreal, Canada also triggered anger among netizens when naming some dishes in a way that outraged Vietanm.

The pho dishes in its menu had the names ‘Pho Kyu’, ‘Pho Kme’, ‘Pho Kit’, ‘Pho King Good’, which, if misread, could make people think of swearing in English. The restaurant guided customers to spell ‘bun thit nuong’ (vermicelli with grilled meat) into a phrase which means genitals in the French language.

After facing criticism, Guillaume Boivin apologized, saying that the naming was not intended to offend anyone and the restaurant will change the names that led to the misunderstanding.

Vietnamese banh my has also been counterfeited. The word ‘Vietnamese banh my wrap’ was seen on the package, but the shape and materials used to make this product are different from the original Vietnamese banh my.

What made people angry was the way the banh my was processed and shaped. Its crust was very thin, rolled into an oval shape, covering the stuffing of pickled carrots, soya cheese and brown rice.

In another case, Peja Krstic, the chef of a restaurant serving Vietnamese style dishes in the US, faced strong criticism from netizens when misspelling the word ‘banh my’ into ‘bahn mi’ when introducing the Vietnamese dish in the menu.

Burger King apologized and removed the ad thought to mock Vietnamese culinary culture with images of a western man struggling to eat ‘Vietnamese Sweet Chili Tendercrisp Burger’ with chopsticks.

Banh my and pho are well known dishes favorite by many foreigners .

Pho was officially included in the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary published on September 20, 2007 in the US and UK. In 2011, banh my was added to the Oxford dictionary as a proper noun.

Hanoi police step up investigations into sexual assaults against foreigners

March 2, 2021 by vov.vn

VOV.VN understands that only four foreigners who were victims of recent sexual assaults carried out by a group of young men have reported the crime to the authorities.

Several other victims have so far failed to show up at the police station, therefore the actual number of victims remains unknown, according to an investigator.

Despite this, no additional sexual assaults have happened since the police tracked down several suspects, including summoning several people for interrogations.

“Police agents have been deployed to patrol around West Lake where sexual assaults happened but recorded no similar cases,” said the investigator.

Thanks to the presence of police forces, foreigners residing around West Lake feel more at ease when going out these days.

“Previously I always brought with me a bottle of self-defence pepper spray, but now I am no longer worried when going out,” said J.K., a 24-year-old girl from South Africa.

Meanwhile, K.M.C, a 25-year-old girl from Ireland, thanked the media and the police for their swift response.

“I am still a bit worried whenever I go out, but the situation is getting better and better now,” she confided.

The police operating in Tay Ho district have handled the case after receiving reports that foreign women living in the locality had fallen victim to a string of sexual assaults carried out by a group of young people.

Some victims stated that they were sexually assaulted by young men as they were walking down main streets such as To Ngoc Van, Quang Ba, and Dang Thai Mai. An Irish victim even said the men drove a motorcycle at her, before strangling her, throwing stones at her, and snatching her belongings.

The police subsequently summoned some suspects for interrogation.

Tay Ho district remains a popular place among Hanoi’s expat community with many foreigners or foreign organisations renting property to either stay or work there.

Hanoi (VNA) – Foreign ministers of the ten ASEAN member states convened a special meeting via videoconference on March 2 to discuss the political crisis in Myanmar.

The Japanese news agency Kyodo quoted a senior official from an ASEAN member country as saying that all 10 foreign ministers are attending, including Myanmar’s military-appointed Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin.

Brunei, which holds the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN this year, organised the meeting under the auspices of Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Malaysian Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said on March 1 that despite ASEAN’s core principle of consensus and non-interference, ASEAN can still play a constructive role in hopefully facilitating a return to normalcy and stability in Myanmar.

During an informal meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on February 26, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, called on parties in Myanmar to exercise self-restraint, avoid escalating tensions, and conduct dialogue towards reaching a satisfactory solution in line with the Constitution and law as well as public aspirations.

In his opinion, the international community needs to create favourable conditions for the transition to democracy in Myanmar and respect the principles of independence, national sovereignty, and non-interference in countries’ internal affairs while ensuring safe and humanitarian access to key services for Myanmar’s people, especially vulnerable groups.

He stressed that Vietnam wants Myanmar to return to stability soon, for the sake of its development as well as for peace, stability, and cooperation in the region and for ASEAN Community building./.

Philippines garment exports projected to hit 2 billion USD this year

March 1, 2021 by en.vietnamplus.vn

Hanoi (VNA) – The Philippines’ exports of garments and hard goods could reach 2 billion USD in 2021 as local garment factories expect to receive up to 500 million USD worth of new orders from global fashion brands.

President of the Foreign Buyers Association of the Philippines (FOBAP) Robert Young said the group has been getting export orders and inquiries for garments and apparel from foreign buyers, including Zeeman Europe, Walmart and TJ Maxx in the US, as well as Hudson’s in Canada.

Young estimates that the additional orders may create about 10,000 to 20,000 jobs in factories located in Metro Manila and Cebu.

To support export activities, he called on the government to ease the community quarantine level.

He also said that factories should have access to loans to allow them to open and operate./.
