ASEM conference on climate change response opens in Can Tho

The event aims to implement Viet Nam’s initiative adopted at the 13th ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Naypyidaw, Myanmar in November 2017, and patronized by seven ASEM member countries, including Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Finland, Netherlands, and Myanmar. Addressing the conference, Deputy PM and FM Pham Binh Minh affirmed that the challenges posed by climate change are hindering the efforts to improve the people’s quality of life and the sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development, while directly affecting the realization of development goals and security of each country, region and the entire globe. As an important inter-regional forum gathering 53 Eurasian members, the main driver of economic growth and innovation in the 21st century, ASEM has the full capability and responsibility for pioneering in realizing its commitments to climate change response for sustainable development, he said. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres (R) receives Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations (Source: VNA) New York (VNA) - The United Nations (UN) values Vietnam’s strong commitment to realising sustainable development goals (SDGs), adapting to climate change, protecting the environment and engaging more strongly in UN’s peacekeeping activities, said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Guterres made the statement at a reception on June 12 for Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, who came to bid farewell at the end of her tenure. Praising Vietnam’s active role in multilateral forums, the UN Secretary General noted that he and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had a deep and comprehensive exchange on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada. Protecting farmers from climate affect a priority: UN

(VEN) - According to a new report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), between 2005 and 2015 natural disasters cost the agricultural sectors of developing economies US$96 billion in damaged or lost crop and livestock production. The report was presented at a conference held in Hanoi on March 15 and 16 to promote implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in the agricultural sectors of Asia and the Pacific. Climate change impact Half that damage – US$48 billion – occurred in Asia, says the report. Some 83 percent of all drought-related economic losses accounted for US$29 billion, according to the report, entitled “The impacts of disaster and crisis on agriculture and food security 2017”. Its authors warned that their findings did not encompass the full picture of damage to agriculture, as little is known about loss to fisheries, aquaculture and forestry.
