The iPhone 5 is an excellent product, but it isn't perfect. Here's the good news: a lot of these issues could be addressed in an iOS 6 update. Three weeks into using the iPhone 5, there's an awful lot I like: the screen, the weight, the speed, and even features like turn-by-turn navigation, which has become my lifeline while moving out to the suburbs with a car. It is, without a doubt, my favorite iPhone. However, there are aspects I'd like to see addressed: Maps is at the top of the list, obviously. But there are also some small features in iOS 6 that could stand to be improved. And, there are some nonsoftware issues as well. "Better reception or Wi-Fi quality" isn't on my list, because I haven't encountered those issues, although there are some people who have. Battery life isn't on here, either, because the battery life on the iPhone 5 is about the same as on the 4S. Sure, it could be even better, but it's on par with many other 4G phones, and good for its slim size. (I'd … [Read more...] about Eight fixes the iPhone 5 needs

The iPhone 5 will be revealed on 12 September, alongside a smaller iPad and a new iPod nano, new reports claim. iMore cites 'sources who have proven accurate in the past', and reckons Apple will debut two new toys at a September event, with the iPhone 5 release date pegged to come nine days later, on 21 September. Those dates would roughly line up with last year's iPhone lid-lifting, which took place on 4 October, with the iPhone 4S hitting shelves 10 days later on 14 October. If Apple stays true to form, the official date of the unveiling will remain secret until roughly one week prior, generating a calculated air of mystery and stymying tech journalists' attempts at making evening plans in September and October. Invites for the 4 October iPhone 4S launch went out on 27 September, one week prior to the big reveal. Purported snaps of the iPhone 5 -- or 'new iPhone' as it's likely to be officially dubbed -- hint at a taller device with a bigger, widescreen display and … [Read more...] about iPhone 5 and iPad mini to be revealed on 12 September?
The new iPhone is getting a smaller socket on the bottom -- which is bad news for your cables, docks and speakers. Fortunately iMore reports that Apple plans a special adaptor to save your docks. Leaked photos reveal the new iPhone is expected to feature a new 19-pin connector port in the bottom for charging and connecting to your computer or audio accessory, such as an iPod dock or speakers. The problem is those accessories and all your existing cables match the larger 30-point dock found in iPhones, iPads and iPods over the last few years. That means all those cables and accessories could be obsolete when you upgrade to a new iPhone -- unless Apple includes an adaptor. I hope it has a smiley face like the micro-USB adapter, pictured above. Why would Apple deliberately ruin all the accessories you already own? Even the smallest saving of space inside a phone makes a difference, allowing more space for a battery or other components like a 4G chip, all squeezed into a thinner … [Read more...] about iPhone 5 new connector could get adaptor to save your dock
SHANGHAI - Apple Inc's next-generation iPhone has not even been released yet, but opportunistic sellers on China's largest e-commerce platform, Taobao, are already accepting pre-orders, complete with mock-up pictures and purported technical specifications. Photo: Reuters The hotly anticipated iPhone 5 is widely expected to be released sometime between August and October this year, although Apple itself has been tight-lipped about it. Sources have said the iPhone 5 would have a bigger screen than previous models, while Taiwanese media reported the phone's voice recognition software, Siri, would have more powerful functions. Sellers on Taobao, a unit of Alibaba Group, are accepting orders for the iPhone 5, in some cases asking for a deposit of 1,000 yuan (US$160) for the new phone. One seller, "Dahai99888", who started accepting pre-orders this week, is asking for full payment upfront, at a cool 6,999 yuan ($1,100). Taobao sellers that Reuters spoke with said they planned to buy … [Read more...] about China pips Apple on iPhone 5 launch
Leaked snaps purporting to show the rump of the next iPhone have cropped up online, hinting Apple's new blower will have a taller frame and a bigger screen. 9to5Mac was sent an image reckoned to show the iPhone 5's back plating by gadget repair site iFixyouri, which the phone-fixing site claims is a new part in its catalogue. Later 9to5Mac acquired more images that would seem to corroborate the design, which has a peculiar Pepé Le Pew-style stripe down the back. Engadget, meanwhile, acquired yet more similar snaps. A smaller connector port is present at the bottom of the mysterious frame, along with a newly placed headphone port. The speaker grille has a new look as well, while there's a tiny gap between the camera and flash, which could be a repositioned microphone. The frame looks a bit taller than the existing iPhone 4S -- a quirk that chimes with recent reports that Apple's next toy will be the same width but will have a taller 4-inch display, so that when you spin it … [Read more...] about iPhone 5 casing snaps tip striped back, taller device
