Vietnamese swimmers defeat Singapore’s Olympic champion and teammates at SEA Games
The Vietnamese swimming team beat 2016 Olympic champion Joseph Schooling of Singapore and his teammates to win a gold medal in the men’s freestyle 4x200m relay event at the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on Tuesday. The team, including Nguyen Huu Kim Son, Nguyen Huy Hoang, Hoang Quy Phuoc, and Tran Hung Nguyen, competed against their rivals from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia in the event. Their performance, seven minutes and 16.31 seconds, outshone that of Singaporean star swimmer Joseph Schooling, who had triumphed in the 100m butterfly at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, and his teammates, earning Vietnam the gold medal. It also set a new record in the category as the former highest achievement was seven minutes and 17.88 seconds. SEA Games 31: Singapore’s gymnasts put end to seven-year medal drought

(Photo: VNA) Hanoi - The men’s gymnastics team of Singapore on May 13 grabbed its first medal since the 2015 SEA Games on home soil. The team scored 297.65 points to secure a bronze at the ongoing SEA Games 31 while host Vietnam triumphed with 331.25 points at the competition held in Hanoi’s Quan Ngua Sports Palace. Captain Terry Tay said regardless of the colour of the medal, it was a feat itself, saying that really has been a journey. He was also part of the team that won bronze in the same event at the 2015 SEA Games but said the two moments could not be compared. Each competition has its own charm and he was happy to have the current team behind him to push together, the Straits Times quoted the gymnast as saying. SEA Games 31: Vietnam hope to rule finswimming events

(Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s finswiming pioneers are aiming to claim 6-8 out of the 13 gold medals on offer at the ongoing 31st Southeast Asia Games ( SEA Games 31 ). When the sport was introduced at the 2003 SEA Games, Vietnam as the host swept 13 out of the 16 golds at stake, while in Laos 2009 and Indonesia 2011 took four and six golds, respectively. Besides Thailand and the Philippines, Indonesia is growing stronger in the sport with many talented athletes, whose stats are on par with Vietnam’s top finswimmers in some categories.
