Buoyed by increasing interest in taking up loans for purchases among the Vietnamese population, recent years saw an impressive growth of personal finance companies in Vietnam, with FE Credit, Viet Credit, SHB Finance, and Easy Credit, among others, joining the market. The market is expected to thrive with some newcomers backed by giant Oriented Commercial Joint Stock Bank (OCB) and Asian Commercial Bank (ACB). It is interesting that many of the current businesses are an extension of the retail banking business of some banks. Their business network, IT, and risk control system, as well as strong capital foundations, bear the marks of commercial banks. For example, FE Credit, a consumer lending company of VPBank and one of the largest players in the industry, announced that its revenue made up 30 per cent of VND9.2 trillion ($400 million) of VPBank’s overall pre-tax profit. With its return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) of 2.5 and 22.9 per cent, respectively, the firm … [Read more...] about More firms competing for shares in Vietnamese consumer lending market

Vietnam in “golden period” for M&A
Tran Vinh Du, deputy director in charge of M&A counselling at EY Vietnam Tran Vinh Du, deputy director in charge of M&A counselling at EY Vietnam, talked to VIR’s Anh Hoa about what, in this context, would attract foreign investors to buy into the state-owned enterprises bound to be equitised this year. Foreign investors are not voracious at the moment, due to Brexit and the US withdrawal from the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement). Does this affect the Vietnamese M&A market? From the sellers’ point of view, there are three factors we need to consider. First of all, there is a huge wave of governmental divestment from many big state-owned enterprises and they became attractive targets for strategic foreign investors. Secondly, private sector firms … [Read more...] about Vietnam in “golden period” for M&A

Vietnam struggles to crack down elephant ivory trafficking
Education for Nature, Vietnam (ENV), has urged heavy sanctions on leaders of wildlife trafficking rings dealing in elephant tusks. From 2010 to 2018, ENV found 150 cases with violations related to elephant tusks, in which the amount of elephant tusks seized by agencies was up to 53 tons. Of these, 30 cases were discovered when ivory was carried to seaports and border gates. In ‘hot spots’ such as Nhi Khe, ivory is no longer traded in the open air, but this doesn’t mean the trafficking has cooled. The police and agencies seized a large amount of ivory last year. More seriously, traffickers now can advertise and sell ivory on line, via social networks, which makes it more difficult to discover trafficking rings. In ‘hot spots’ such as Nhi Khe, ivory is no longer traded in the open air, but this doesn’t mean the trafficking has cooled. The police and agencies seized a large amount of ivory last year. Bui Thi Ha from ENV said Vietnam is not … [Read more...] about Vietnam struggles to crack down elephant ivory trafficking
We’re in denial mode as the Mekong Delta goes under
Nguyen Dang Anh Thi Tu woke up early as usual to open up her shop. As she reached it, something caught her attention and she stopped. A crack, long and winding like a resting boa, sundered the National Highway 91 in two. On the other side was her little shop, her family’s lifeline for several decades. Her instincts immediately told her the shop could no longer be saved. It was barely clinging on to an asphalt patch that could collapse into the nearby Hau Giang River at any time. She was right. A few days later, that road section cracked and fell into the river, patch by patch, along with Tu’s shop. This was late July. Tu’s shop was a place that my friend and I frequented every time I visited An Giang Province on business. We met again recently as he was about to take his child to Vancouver in Canada for the latter’s studies. In fact, he recently took the decision to relocate his entire family to Canada. As someone whose ancestors have lived in the Mekong Delta … [Read more...] about We’re in denial mode as the Mekong Delta goes under
